i really could do without jim james on this album, whenever he shows up my interest dies

His presence isn't as bad as I expected it could be.

I have this problem. I enjoy some MMJ, but he's treated like a god around here a lot. I think it makes me dislike MMJ more than I do.

I think the reason why people love Jim James (or at least why I love Jim James) is because he has one of those iconic voices that can just soar and completely floor you. I can see how people might not be into his voice, the same way people can hate Neil Young, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan etc. because their voices are very prominent and very different than the norm. The reason that I find James' voice so endearing (especially on the first 3 MMJ albums) is because it seems so honest, and it feels like he is singing almost beyond his ability. When I listen to music, my ear goes directly to the vocals. If I can hear the sincerity in a singer's voice, something clicks for me...and something definitely clicks with Jim James when I hear him sing. He describes it well, himself, in the song "The Way He Sings" from At Dawn.

I completely agree. His voice really moves me in the first 3 albums in a way only Ryan Adams and Eddie Vedder has in the past.

See, I like Oberst, a lot but his voice is so bare and naked sounding that it makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I have the same problem with Elliott Smith. I respect them both a lot as songwriters, but their songs are hard to listen to.

i'm a sucker for that. that draws me in to singers unlike anything else, its a type of honesty that sucks me in. people also accuse me of listening to things that are heavy when they are trying to be in a good mood, but that's the stuff that makes my day

the reverb and harmonies are good, but i never really see it done well or special from jim. it always feels shallowly included and not included because its what the song needed.

If these guys are coming to your town...go. I assume if you're reading this thread you will be going anyway. However, in the chance you were on the fence...go. I just saw them tonight and man I'm ready to go back again. Really amazing. Worth every penny.

It's really amazing. One of those once in a lifetime kind of things. The first thing I did when I got home was to see if I can fly to see another show. I'll be in Philly for Pearl Jam and am then spending a few days in NYC. I am pretty tempted to extend the trip through the weekend.

My friend just asked last night if I wanted to go see them and I told him if he got tickets to get me one.

Having seen Conor Oberst, M Ward, and Jim James before, I feel like i know what I'm in for. And what Matty has described has only confirmed that.

:haha:

I know. Even worse, I will be in NYC till November 3 visiting friends. I could easily stay for a few more days but the problem is my dog. My friend is watching him and I don't want her to have to watch him longer than a week. I think there is a decent chance I call from NYC and push back my flight.

You should also go see these guys in NYC, it's around the same time. November 5th.

The whole album is available for free on their website. It's a supergroup of people not nearly as famous as Monsters of Folk. The center is Glen Phillips who was Toad The Wet Sprocket's frontman. The album is fantastic and Glen puts on a really good show.

That weekend in NYC also has the comedy festival and Bruce at MSG. Fuck me.

It's not folk music. I hate that word for some reason. I picture hippies and women with hairy legs.

Seeing them at the Auditorium here in Chicago on Friday with my wife (who's 5 months pregnant and will want to sit the entire show -- shouldn't be a problem, should it?). Based on their setlists from this tour, I'm super excited. Good times.

saw them in The Hague last night, amazing performance!!

They played for 2,5 hours it started of slowly and ended with a big bang! Conor was standing on the drumkit and really rocking out. But they all had their spotlight, just didn't know where to look at times. Dear God (sincerely MOF) was a psychadelic highlight, one of many. I think they played like 30 songs or something, the whole MOF record plus some mmj, oberst and ward songs. Just wonderfull!!
