Miles Davis - Birth of Cool
See, kismet! A guy who likes going in chronological order could do worse than starting off with the first recordings Miles ever made as a leader, which came out as individual sides in the late '40's and were collected on the full-length "Birth of the Cool" LP in (to the best of my recollection) the early '50's. They were hugely influential--the LP is very aptly named. Miles was still finding his solo voice, but those recordings are definitely a touchstone in his career. I love the sound of those recordings--they capture a real sense of time and place, and I'd love to hear them on vinyl.
I love "Reactor" too--maybe Neil and the Horse's most unduly forgotten record.

Reactor: T-Bone...it always made me sad that Neil had mashed potatos but no t bone

Couple o' things: I picked up the new GY!BE today for what was the best price I've seen for it so far ($22.99); I'm just getting into these guys now, and I've listened to this one a few times online already. It makes great grading and class preparing background music, maybe surprisingly! Looking forward to spinning it.
THEN, on my ride home, I spotted a pair of speakers on the sidewalk in front of a house around the corner from my apartment! My mother taught me never to turn my nose up at free things on the curb, so I grabbed them. They're a pair of Cerwin Vega High Energy Design Speakers, model number CV-3000. I did some quick Googling and, if they're in good shape, it sounds like this was well worth the two minutes it took to put them in the trunk.

Update: I tried the speakers and they don't work! I had to try.

So my local record shop has a Marantz 2235b receiver I am thinking about buying. Seemed like it was in good working order. They offered $240, which seemed a little high though. I would also prefer a higher wattage but it would probably be fine for my living room. They are having a black Friday 20 percent off sale, might hold off until then...
Anyone here have a 2235b? I'm thinking about going back next weekend...
Yeah, I like the fact that this thing is local and I know what i'm getting, but they want a little too much for it. We cranked some weird rap beats album on it today so sound wise it would get loud enough. From what I understand the 2245 is a good model because it has a lot of the same components as the 2270 even though it is only 45 watts, and that helps it hold up better.

I TRASH PICKED MORE SPEAKERS TODAY. I'll let you all know how they work.
I recently pre-ordered the new NY+CH, the new DInosaur Jr live album, a bunch of singles from Drag City, and got Dinosaur Jr's "Farm" and an old Bonnie Prince Billy EP from eBay. I like to pretend I have money.
