i don't have much use for country but if you've got any albums with only vocals - comedy albums, a capella, etc - i'd be interested.

New to vinyl, and I got a record player setup with 2 speeds, 45 and 33. I have just some standard records(33 1/3), which I assume uses the 33 speed, but the records really drag. Anybody know the problem?

My first thought was the newer ones I have weigh too much and are weighing the tt down, but I even tried the older thinner seeming ones.

is your table direct drive or belt driven? if it's an old belt driven table the belt might be worn out and causing the drag. it's also possible the needle isn't balanced properly and is putting too much weight on the record. a lot of tables allow you to adjust the counterbalance for the needle.

that's about all i can think of right now.

Most definitely. Lots of old comedy albums... Bill Cosby, Lilly Tomlin, etc. I'll pull out a list for you.

Again, I'll put together a list. I can't tell you off hand. Over the weekend I'll do an inventory and send you guys a list of the give-away pile.

I got an, at least, temporary fix. The needle was pressin against the record too hard, so I put a stack of pennies on the other end. I plan on gettin a good one soon enough.

Spinning??

James Gang- Rides Again

I have a feeling I may get carried away with this. I love the sound, and there is definitely somethin different about it.

Would a lint free rag work to dust them off. The new ones I got have a bunch of leftover factory junk and the used ones I have, just seem pretty nasty.

Yeah, everyone and their grandma seems to have that one in their collection. But it's just so good on vinyl.

I just picked up the Crosley 4in1. I was surprised how good it sounds, for the price. The speakers break up at around 3/4 volume. I wonder if a couple new speakers would help?

I went a little crazy in the last few days scouring around trying to load up on as many of my favorites as possible.

Won 3 Zep vinyls for $6 on ebay, and Abbey Rd, Ten, and In Rainbows are on the way.

Got my eye on a few more lots.

In Rainbows is awesome on vinyl. my only complaint is you have to flip the record between Faust Arp and Reckoner. i miss the seamless transition.

anyone listened to the Mer De Noms reissue? i haven't played it yet but the artwork looks great.

The artwork is badass.

One of those I can see myself gettin in the future. I was never a big fan of that album. I was busy with other bands and missed it. I caught up with them on 13th Step, so Mer D Noms kinda got overlooked, so I opted for 13th Step, which I am digging even more than I used to.

A few things I have picked up on since gettin some vinyls and a player......

A guitar sound like APC and Tool actually sounds alot more like a guitar ragin through an amp. I have always thought that Adam Jones' tone while f'ing amazing, sound a bit sterile or computerized, if you know what I mean.

You can actually make out some of lightning fast drum stuff that Danny Carey does. That alone has got me so pumped to get some Zeppelin, Rush, and Mars Volta vinyls.

When the singer sings, it's like you can imagine standin in the studio with them. At several points(mostly mellower) Maynard, Jim James, and Isaac Brock sound like they are just sittin in the chair next to me singing.

I have actually heard things that I have never heard before. And these are albums that I have pored over, countless times.

I can't explain it, but they seem to be a little fuzzy, yet perfectly clear sounding. To be honest I have noticed only a slight hiss, but the extra warmth, depth, and overall awesomeness is more than worth it.

I know what you mean about the guitar tone. That was one of the first things that struck me with the Lateralus vinyl was how it helped bring out the chunkiness of the guitar. Overall vinyl really helps glue together Tool's sound, it adds clarity and removes some of the muddiness in the mix. I wish they'd finally give 10K Days the treatment.

Definitely pick up some TMV. Amputechture sounds great on vinyl, and the discs look amazing. They're some of my favorite picture discs along with the orange & purple discs for Lullabies to Paralyze.

picture discs can be deceiving... i have some that sound muddy and lack oomph

i've heard the same thing about picture discs from other audiophiles. i guess it has to do with the type of vinyl used. i always get a regular disc if i have the choice but i haven't noticed a problem with the few picture discs i have.

to the neophytes, the first thing you should do when getting into vinyl, if you're serious about it, is cleaning your records, buying a new needle and making sure your the arm is balanced. read up as much as you can.

as for spinning, im expanding my beatles and zep collection. picked up the white album and zep II this weekend from a cool place in fells point, baltimore. you have the ring the bell to a gated walkway between two buildings, walk through someones back yard and into a converted store that used be a garage. most of the discs are in good shape and the owner is very chill and helpful.

That sounds brilliant. You should've asked the owner what were the top 5 musical crimes perpetrated by Stevie Wonder in the 80s and 90s.

Brought home another vinyl haul last night after replying to a craigslist ad. Not nearly as big as the last one, but a guy who had about 700 classic rock albums in pristine condition and was selling them off for $2 each. So I ended up grabbing 25 albums for $50, even ones that I already had because they were such nice shape. Off the top of my head....

Beatles - Abbey Road, Let it Be, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Live at Hollywood, Beatles '65, Greatest Hits, Hard Days Night, Sgt Pepper
Stones - Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Aftermath
Lennon - Imagine, Plastic Ono Band (the good one, not the sucky one)
AC/DC - For Those About to Rock, Highway to hell
Sabbath - Paranoid, Vol 4
Pink Floyd - Meddle, Wish you were Here

Last night:

and then I listened to Side 6 (Night On Bald Mountain->Ave Maria) of this:

before falling asleep. That Fantasia set is beautiful. Mine isn't in the best condition, but if you've ever seen one, you know what a great package it is.
