Post subject:  The Vinyl Thread - Where Every Day is RSD

We need a dedicated vinyl thread, so here we go...
What are you spinning these days on the Turntable?
What's your setup? Model? Cartridge? Receiver?

I just restored a beautiful Pioneer SX-3700 Receiver (circa 1980) from my in-laws basement the other night. Hooked it up to the PC and Pioneer TT and it worked like a charm. First order of business was some Ramones S/T on 180g vinyl. It sounded fantastic. Very smooth and tight bass.

I'd go so far to say that even Mp3's sound warmer on this old vintage gear.

Anyone else rockin' an old receiver?

:edit:
Here's the original 70's ad for my TT

I've got a Stanton T60 running into an old Harmon Kardon receiver. Nothing special but it gets the job done.

Most recently I've been spinning DJ Shadow's Preemptive Strike and The Roots' Game Theory.

Ha, I played the new Portishead at the wrong speed the other day. The music actually sounded pretty good until the vocals came in and I realized something was up.

I'll bet the old Harmon Kardon is nice.
As for speeds... yeah I've put on a few new albums at the wrong speed because of this trend of releasing new LPs at 45rpm. They released the new R.E.M. that way, and while it sounds nice, it's still a digitally recorded/compressed album and for 28 minutes of music it's a lot of work to flip 4 sides.

i don't see the point of mastering a digital recording at 45 rpm, what's the point?

Use Your Illusion II, The Bakerton Group, Jeff Beck Wired

I have a Marantz mid 60's table with a newer Marantz amp. Project preamp and a black pearl needle.

Not that hard to find on Egay. In fact, I won an auction with the entire discograpy (illusions still sealed) with singles and a vinyl bootleg for a very reasonable price. The only one I am missing is Live!@? Like a Suicide.

Better yet, I would love to have the original rape-cover version of Appetite.
I think I'm going to have to track one of those down.

Antiyou, what is the Marantz TT like? I know they were top of the line in amplifiers through the 70's, but I'm curious about their tables. Did you have to do any work on it? Has it been restored?

Last night I only had a chance to enjoy some Beatles - Abbey Road. The record was in bad shape so it was a background listen.

The only work I've had done on it was a setup and cleaning. I do have to replace the line out cable but it is in great working condition. My dad bought it in the 60's and he gave it to me when I was a teen. It is in absolutely mint condition and weighs about 25lbs. It's just a giant slab of wood. I'll take some pics over the next few days and post. Apparently it's an audiophile collector table. I've had offers to sell but I see no reason to part with it. I really don't know how common it is as I've never actually researched it.
