I've been running to Zeppelin III lately and for the first time, JPJ's work on Immigrant Song has JUMPED out at me. Made the song that much better!

From a transition standpoint though, I feel the record is very important. It lacks the raw emotion of the first 4 albums, and the well constructed, "complete" feel of the later albums. It just feels in between to me, and as a result lacks identity.

It's definitely a mixed bag.

Turns out I like The Song Remains The Same more than most. I'd probably give it #4 on this record.

What's weird about Song Remains the Same is that I can't remember what the studio version sounds like. I immediately default to the live version, which I like more.

I don't think they're all that dissimilar. Sometimes, I miss all of Jimmy's layers on the live stuff. But I think I'm with you here. This one is pretty good live.

Same here....I put it among the quintessential Zep songs.

My HotH goes somethin like this...

TSRTS
Rain Song-I sorta count the first 2 as one song
Over the Hills.....
The Ocean
Dancing Days
No Quarter....love the song, but it seems overproduced, too fast and it pales in comparison to the version from TSRTS
The Crunge
D'yer Mak' er

Man, I love Led Zeppelin.

I totally feel like skipping work today and playing all of their albums from start to finish. But alas.

My take on Houses of the Holy is that the drop in quality after song 3 is too big for it to feel as an 'album'. I like the other songs, bar the Crunge. But those first three... boy boy, that's some sexy music.

Dancing Days is such an underrated song, I love the feel good vibe of it.

The Ocean is the perfect blend of "rockin" and groove.

I really like Houses of the Holy. Except for "The Crunge," arguably Zeppelin's worst song, I don't understand accusations of its being "a mixed bag."

I don't view that as a negative. I think it's just that is definitely a transitional album between the more raw elements that made up the first four albums and the more crisp, produced sound that made up the later albums. Neither being better or worse than the other.. just different. And Houses falls right in the middle of that.

and I enjoy the Crunge for what it is- a song that somehow became what it was mocking if you attempt to take it seriously.

The Crunge is a top 10 Zeppelin song for me, containing what is arguably the greatest drum beat of all time.

Zeppelin's worst song award would have to go to All My Love.

The Crunge sounds exactly like every song by mid-90s Adelaide-based band Sin Dog Jellyroll.

True story.
