i think i'm ready to make such a declaration, put it in writing....

i dont usually rank things, can't ever come up with a top 10 song, album, artist, or anything...

But i think I might be able to say what my favorite song of all time is...

Not shooting from the hip...

but im pretty damn sure this is my favorite song ever. The lyrics, the melody, the phrasing, the simplicity of the music, THE VOICE, the message, all of it...

Tom Waits - Hold On from Mule Variations 1999

They hung a sign up in out town
if you live it up, you wont
Live it down
So, she left monte rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With charcoal eyes and monroe hips
She went and took that california trip
Well, the moon was gold, her
Hair like wind
She said dont look back just
Come on jim
(chorus)
Oh you got to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, Im standing right here
You gotta hold on

Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone is looking for someone to blame
But you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You dont meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said baby, I still love you
Sometimes theres nothin left to do

Oh you got to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, Im standing right here, you got to
Just hold on.

Well, God bless your crooked little heart st. louis got the best of me
I miss your broken-china voice
How I wish you were still here with me

Well, you build it up, you wreck it down
You burn your mansion to the ground
When theres nothing left to keep you here, when
Youre falling behind in this
Big blue world

Oh you go to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, Im standing right here
You got to hold on

Down by the riverside motel,
Its 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store she closed her eyes
And started swaying
But its so hard to dance that way
When its cold and theres no music
Well your old hometown is so far away
But, inside your head theres a record
Thats playing, a song called

Hold on, hold on
You really got to hold on
Take my hand, Im standing right here
And just hold on.

I always absolutely hate it when people post things/lyrics/video's/... without saying who it is. I have no idea what it is and probably because you didn't put a titel/artist, I'm not even interested anymore.

by the way, I'm sorry 62strat that this thread had the honour to receive my rant. This has been bugging me for quite some time and now you're on the receiving end. Could as well been somewhere else.

And I'm not into Tom Waits, maybe one day.

I could lsiten to Hold On anytime, of anyday, any time of year, and in any mood and still love it.

I can also listen to it on repeat for hours on end and still love it.

You know Strat, I've been giving this very question some serious ponderous thought lately as well. I'm pretty sure and confident that I can now say that The Stone Roses "Fools Gold" (in particular the "What The World is Waiting For" EP version) is that song for me.

Having said that, Bruce's "Lost in the Flood", Paul Kelly's "How to Make Gravy", Radiohead's "High and Dry" and Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond (I - V)" have all also held that spot for me over the last fortnight.

Make of that what you will.

And Hold On is a beautiful song by an absolute legend...and Angus I agree with your rant. In particular I hate when people post youtube vids with no notes as to who/what it is. I'm not gonna click play, just tell me who the fuck it is you want me to listen to (although thanks for the link if I do happen to want to check it out on that very rare ocassion..thanks but still, tell me who the hell's vid you are posting)...

Comfortably Numb is pretty firmly entrenched as mine. Teen angst brought me to the song, and the song never let go as I got older.

Comfortably Numb is a song by Pink Floyd, by the way, in case you've been living behind a Wall for all these years.

Indeed. Hence the capitalization of Wall.

No Sir! I disagree!

Difficult, certainly. Requisite of a fair amount of testicular fortitude? Certainly. But doable and postable? Without doubt.

My plea to you OB-ites. Be brave, be sure, be without fear of any and all "Popular Opinion" and just post your favourite. Right now, as you think of it. I reckon t would be a very interesting list that ensued.

If your favourite changes tomorrow, so what? Doesn't matter a whit! What's your favourite right this second? I wanna know.
