Dirt in the Ground

I am assuming Waits has been covered a ton, but some of them are very compelling (to me). Most folks I know are turned off by his voice, choice of instruments, etc. Of course nothing stands up to the original, but covers can be interesting. Especially stripping down a song.

one of the most beautiful things I've heard in recent memory.

a shame I'm sure the original doesn't compare.

youre a mess.

I hate tom waits covers. Sure, i do some myself but i am not doing them to better them i am doing them to enjoy myself. My point is, everytime i hear someone cover waits it makes me NEED to listen to the original. his voice is a very important aspect of his music and his songs call for his voice.

hwoever, there has been one cover that i thought has been done very beautifuly. And that is this:

When Tom Waits sings it's like looking directly into the soul of humanity and finding things there that are equally horrifying and reassuring. When other people sing his songs they sound like songs.
