One of my favorite bands playing for free at a beautiful venue. Artpark, right on the beautiful Niagara gorge. 25-30 minutes north of Buffalo and just south of the Canadian border. There's a free show every Tuesday night and I've been lucky to catch some good acts there. Anyone in the area should def. check it out. Well worth the drive.

DTB has been my favorite band for 7 years now.
Have you been able to catch them live? They play up this way fairly often so I've been lucky enough to see them a bunch of times. Along with Gov't Mule, my favorite live band.

I've been really enjoying the Derek Trucks Band lately. Is anyone else a fan, and what are people's favorite recordings?
live or studio?
Studio, Soul Serenade is my favorite followed by Joyful Noise.
Studio. The only album I've heard is Songlines. I don't know what I was expecting, but the energy and the fusion of different styles is very appealing. Derek Trucks playing is extremely evocative. And I love the way that his combo plays together. The rhythm players have a melodic voice while still maintaining the momentum of the songs. I don't know how you feel about Songlines, but I'll be sure to take a look at Soul Serenade and Joyful Noise.

Songlines is a great album..... but i was taken back when i first listened to it, it is a VERY polished and slick production in comparison to the rest. I really like that album but it took some time to get used to it for me. It is important to not that this is the only studio recording with the current singer, Mike Mattison, on it.
You know, Joyful Noise just might be my favorite it is a tough call..... Joyful Noise is all over place with genres but it still flows very well. SO CLOSE, SO FAR AWAY blows me away everytime i listen to it, it needs to be played loud. As the title depicts, this is a mostly upbeat album... GREAT STUFF.
Soul Serenade is a mellower and jazzier album than Joyful Noise.

But you can not match his intensity, rawness, and ability to light it up or slowly build a huge fire like he does in a live setting. I LOVE DTB and have since the first time i saw them live.

He's done a number of film soundtracks, and he produced the Buena Vista Social Club album. He works in a variety of genres. I can't really describe what he does, except that he plays slide guitar and you can recognize he work if you hear it. Check out his soundtrack for Paris, Texas. It features DARK WAS THE NIGHT, COLD WAS THE GROUND. If you like that, you should check out Blind Willie Johnson.

I've always find myself picking up Out of the Madness, although you can't really go wrong with any of his albums.
I was fortunate enough to get the chance to meet him twice. The first time was before an Allman show in Chicago. Drinking a few beers in the beer garden before the show and I see this guy with a guitar in a soft case shell thrown on his back- just minding his own business - all by himself. As he walked by, I asked, Derek? He stopped and said hello, told him my ears were looking foward to listening to him that night. He smiled & went on his way. A couple of years later I saw him after an Allman show -just walking down an alley with the guitar on his back disappearing into the night.
The impressions I got from these "little brushes with greatness" were that Derek truly lives & breathes music. You could just see it in his eyes. Strange cat, but we are all better for it
I have never gotten the chance to catch a DTB show. I've seen him perform a few times with the Allmans, and experiencing him on stage with Warren is just a tremendous thing to see. They feed off each other greatly, and I'm hugely looking forward to the May ABB dates. I also hope I can see DTB at Mountain Jam... eager for that line-up announcement. I would have really liked to see him along with Clapton, but well I like on the wrong continent apparently. I checked out their tour dates and the spring has them opening up for Santana, and they are playing CT... but there is no way I'm paying for Santana.
