It was a good song a long time before Nirvana.

I'll agree, but every time I hear someone talk about this song, it's as if it is really a Nirvana song. Hell, I'm not sure if anyone other than me around here has heard it done in its traditional form.

i think most people would recognize it -- they just like nirvana's version.

I absolutely love Nirvana's version of this - I love Kurt's waily/screamy thing he has going. I've been singing this around the house a lot lately - certainly a good way to piss the kids off.

I even learnt it on guitar the other day - hardest part was tuning down a full step!

Excellent song - my favourite off unplugged.

The version off the first Outcesticide makes for an interesting listen.

The version from 2/14/94 trumps every other version Nirvana ever recorded. Like, it's the best shit ever. Kurt sounds completely and utterly psychotic.

I don't know the date, but if this is the recording i'm thinking of then you sir are right. Probably the best vocal performance i've ever heard from him, and the fact that it's better than the unplugged version says a LOT.

I'll have to dig it up. I don't have it with me at work. I think it's on one of the Outcesticide discs though.

It's also on this fan comp (which you should track down if you can find it):

I finally got to hear a ledbelly version of this the other day. It has a pretty different feel than Kurt's version. So does Mark Lanegan's. Ledbelly's is a little wry and playful, Lanegan's is menacing, and Kurt's is pained

yep they did it's on Lanegan's first solo record(Nirvana just backed Lanegan musically on that song)...

Kurt sings it better though...

Ledbelly's version is great in the way that all the old blues singers voices are so unique and soulful...no white person could ever reproduce that vocal tone...

I can't imagine their being a better vocal performance of this song than the unplugged version. I'd love to hear this other version being referred to.
