I really liked that song in Garden State, so I downloaded the album, Oh Inverted World, and was quite impressed. The song from Garden State (New Slang) is by far the best, but I like a few of the others (while some are too sparse and suck). Overall, it is one of the better albums I have heard in a while.
Perhaps it should be the next KKMC?
Also, I was curious what happened; this album was released in 2001 and I didn't see anything since, did they vreak up.

I don't know if this qualifies for KKMC, as most people have already heard the Shins. And they most certainly didn't break up. They came out with an album in 2003 called Chutes Too Narrow.
Chutes Too Narrow is a good record but I prefer Oh, Inverted World. I saw them live and they were excellent, all of the songs were kinda amped up and they rocked the joint. Lots of instrument swapping too, if I remember correctly.

The Shins are one of my favorite newer bands right now

I like the shins. They certainly are the beach boys/moody blues of the 21st century. Their sound is very soft and I like to listen to their stuff when I need to come down.

THE SHINS LYRICS
"The Celibate Life"
The dust from a four-day affair is now landing
All over the floor and your brown legs
The glod plated legs of my rival
Whose eyes had no reason to fall.
You led no celibate life no skirt while chemicals danced on your head.
You stole the keys to this ride and your fables are falling tonight.
Because of your struggle to make them.
Their taste for your past time is fading
Remember the girls in the middle are always the first to fall off.
You'll learn to live like a mouse,
Searching the cracks in the floor to remember
All the dregs in the crowd you barely recall
You led no celibate life no skirt while chemicals danced on your head.
You stole the keys to this ride and your fables are falling tonight.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Has to be the best, most heartbreaking track they recorded. And it sounds like it came from 1965.

That is like Neutral Milk Hotel lyric-wise.

There's a definite Neutral Milk influence in James Mercer's lyrics.
Have you heard Oh Inverted World??
