So I was just listening to Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan (not entirely sure why) and I was pretty amazed by the amount of obvious overdubs I could hear-- additional guitar and doubletracked vocals all around.

Which live albums have you heard that are ridiculously overdubbed? What's "fixed" in them? And does it bother you?

The Fleetwood Mac reunion tour live album comes to mind, my friend was listening to it the other day and I was thinking how this doesn't even sound live.

Thin Lizzy's Live And Dangerous is supposed to be one of the best live albums you'll ever hear, but also has some studio overdubs on it. Doesn't fuckin matter though 'cos it truly is a kick ass way to spend an hour

Phil Ochs in Concert is an incredible record, but supposedly almost all of the vocals had to be redone in the studio because he was so nervous at the show.

The song remains the same? I think. Or at least the album audio is different to the dvd audio or something.

The Who's Kids are alright record had to have the drums re-recorded for the live tracks from Shepperton studios segments(which were as it turned out, also Keith Moons last performance with the band ever) simply because Moon was so all over the place on the day.

ev post. :)

That's because they soundtrack and film both used parts of different shows. I wouldn't be surprised if there were studio overdubs though. Jimmy Page did some overdubs for How the West Was Won.

The Zeppelin stuff is pro-tooled rather than overdubbed.

Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East, vocals supposedly redone live in the studio.
David Bowie - Stages, many overdubs due to substance abuse problems
Ozzy - Any of his live albums, major vocal overdubs

This is not an egregious example, but I believe there were some touch-ups done to 101 by Depeche Mode.

Nighthawks at the Diner isn't entirely live, is it?

Get Your Ya-Ya's Out is pretty famous for having a lot of overdubs. Not being a Stones fan, it doesn't bother me either way.

The Grateful Dead's Europe '72 has quite a few overdubs supposedly, especially on the vocals. Having heard some gigs proper from that same year, I fully support the overdubs. It's one of their most beautiful records.

Miles Davis's '70's live albums are very heavily edited--Live-Evil in particular. As performance, it's fairly stifled compared to the Cellar Door sessions that produced it, but as an art piece, the edited cuts do have their own character, especially when pitted against the little studio sketches. At Fillmore from earlier in 1970 also has a pretty notorious reputation for being ruined by bad editing.

A remote live recording used as a basic track is different than a live album with overdubbing.

See "Betterman", "My Iron Lung", or any number of Grateful Dead or Frank Zappa albums.

I'm really surprised no one mentions the latest Metallica dvds. They have a lot of drum and vocal touch ups.
Especially the double bass during Dyers eve etc.

Thanks. You deserve my backup whenever it's needed.
