After hearing how great they sounded at the show last night... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get some new material in the next year.

is there any reason to think that chris cornell knows how to write a decent song anymore? Billy Corgan reforming the Pumpkins didn't get him out of his rut.

The other guys in the band aren't slouches in that department, though, and it's pretty clear that Cornell relies on collaborators much more than the songwriting credits would indicate.

This.

Does a shitty solo artist ever go back to the good old days?

No, this has no chance of being good. I'm not even going to listen to it because it would be painful to hear Cornell's destroyed voice trying to sing some Soungdarden now, like walking in on your parents having sex and never being able to look at them the same way again.

Billy formed Billy, Jimmy, and friends.... He did not reform Smashing Pumpkins.

Stip makes a good point. Its not like the hired guns wrote the music. That all fell on Billy's shoulders. Zeitgeist had some horrific songs and the good songs never surpassed his music in the first half of the nineties.

Its been over a decade since Euphoria Morning, the last time we heard a good song from Cornell. A new SG record could be OK if they all had equal input in trying to make it great, but if a new album meant Carry On Part 2, no thanks.

As if the rest of the band would let Chris push a bunch of shitty songs through the studio with them in tow.

how did soundgarden handle their writing the first time around?

Mostly Chris, then Kim, then Matt/Ben.

Kim wrote a lot more in the early years.

I hope Kim has a lot to say on a new record. The heavy drudgeyness is what I love about Soundgarden. Louder Than Love is my favorite.

My guess is they will give it a try. If it doesn't sound awesome they scrap it....they won't F with their legacy.

Post subject:  Re: Soundgarden | New album 2011

From what I've read and been brought to understand one of the many things that led to them calling it a day was the fact that they were at a crossroads as far as what direction to drive the band. Kim wanted them to go back to the sound and direction of some of their earlier stuff, while Chris wanted to go more of a direction of what we ended up seeing on Euphoria Morning.

I would think (hope) that if they were going to put out a new album it would be a cohesive effort, and if it gives Kim the chance to come up with some great sludgy riffs, that's fine by me.

A new record is just to risky, there's nothing to be won. Reunite the band, release a live record, open the vault and do some touring is basically all I need.

Like we've seen with the Pixies or RATM, or kinda like Pavement.

There's just so much to be lost with a new record, remember 'the weirdness' (stooges) or 'Zeitgeist' (Pumpkins).

Dinosaur JR. is the only exception I can think of at the moment.
