they have moments, but when i branch out into their catalog its usually a let down. even the songs i like aren't that great. they are usually simple, just surrounded with weirdness. the live shows are fun, but yeah. i don't know i feel underwhelmed by them on the whole.

The Soft Bulletin arrived in my mailbox a few days ago =)
I've only started getting into their stuff in the last few months, but i'm really falling for them. I want Do You Realize played at my funeral. And my wedding. And any time there is cause for celebration inbetween.

I don't think it's a bad thing to have simple songs enhanced by a lot of effects and great production. These are skills that take time and hard work.
nothing wrong with it, bright eyes does it... but the redeeming part of that is his lyrics. but i don't know it gets boring. i feel like they are just an okay band which is somehow regarded as great, and i don't see the "great band" here. i guess i just want someone to prove me wrong.

Have you dug any deeper than their last three albums? In A Priest Driven Ambulance is my favorite, I'd say, nothing like what most people think they know the Flaming Lips sound like. Clouds Taste Metallic is also super awesome.

on the whole not so great, huh?
Totally agree. One of the most overrated bands out there. Gimmicky crap with some of the worst vocals I have heard. She Dont Use Jelly was kind of a cool song but I havent liked anything from them since (and yes, I have listened to their so called best albums)

i think i agree with this thread. a few years ago i wouldn't have. they are a great live band, though. one of the most genuinly joyful experiences of my life was seeing the flaming lips live. this band should be experienced on an emotional level, which i think might be way they coat their music with candy and synthesizers. strip it with that, and you have kind of a poor neil young rip-off. they would be a great instrumental band.

i also don't want to point out that they have some songs i really enjoy. namely "All We Have is Now" i think is a great song in all senses of the word great... but i think its merely cause an existential song that includes time travel is something that really cuts me to the core. but on the whole, most flaming lips albums have lots of filler. the new one i disliked mainly for that whole seventies rock/falsetto vibe that the guitar riffs had. though it probably was their most interesting album to date that i've heard. but yeah... still not a great band ya know?

I already mentioned the fact that they ripped off their whole stage schtick from the Butthole Surfers in another thread, but I'll go ahead and mention it again here. As for the albums, I loved them up through Yoshimi, but the last one was just ok.
