Saw him last night in Columbus. Third time I've seen him, but first time in quite a while.
He begins with eight songs from his most recent album, Peachtree Road. An interesting choice, but I think it works for him. If he sprinkled these songs throughout the concert, they'd be momentum killers. They really were good tunes, and this way folks listened more attentively, as anticipation builds for the hits.
His voice, piano, and band really sounded great. His voice remains powerful, but he does NOT go after high notes anymore (most noticeable on Rocket Man).
There was a camera on his fingers at times. I don't know how that fucker plays so amazingly with the bloated sausage links he has for fingers....
As I waited for the anticlimactic Your Song finish, I couldn't help noticing a number of highlights that would've closed the show SO much better - Philadelphia Freedom, Levon, The Bitch is Back, and especially Take Me to the Pilot - fucking awesome.
Plenty of long intros and outros that went over well.
Impressively, he played from about 8:05 PM - 10:45 PM.

Awesome, I'd love to see him in a regular show. I saw him on the Philly Parkway on the 4th of July which was awesome since we were close but i really have to make an effort to see him next time he's on tour for a regular show.

my girlfriend went to the show at the wachovia center a little while back and she said he was pretty bad. they left before the show was over.

i first saw him at the palladium in ny in 79 [i think] it was just him and percussionist ray cooper...f-ing great show

I was thinking that it'd be nice to see him without a band, or, as you noted, just a percussionist with him...in a small venue. Nice.
Anyways, for an almost 60-year-old dude to be giving shows over 2 1/2 hours is pretty cool....

Elton is one of the best performers out there. He always puts on an incredible show. He's starting to slow down a bit though as he gets older. I've seen him 6 times, most recently in April and he only played about 2 and half hours. That's still a hell of a long time to play and more than most artists/groups perform, but when I saw him back in the 90s he was playing 3 hour shows.
I don't like starting the show with 8 straight songs from the Peachtree album. He did that when I saw him in April and the crowd got really bored with it after the first couple songs. Even when he started his hits I didn't think the flow of the setlist was very good. Nonetheless it was worth the price of admission.
