I hope I can get around to making that dream a reality too.

When I was probably 19 my parents got me a stereo deck with a USB hookup and an iPod hookup. Haven't had a cd since then. It's great. I hop into my car, plug my iPod in, and am good to go.

Having digital copies of your music and owning the physical product aren't mutually exclusive, guys.

Oh, I know.

I just prefer digital - and it takes up much less room.

I'm terrible with CDs (and most other physical objects), I break everything.

I like the idea that Gods' Die has purged his home of CD's since they're on the brink of becoming obsolete, but someday hopes to have enough money to amass a collection of other things which have been more or less obsolete for 30 years.

Computer files can be exact representations of CDs, but not vinyl records. So it's not the same thing there.

You're telling me having some Miles Davis records won't make me look like a complete badass? Or a huge poser hipster...either way CDs have always been about the portable factor and they've been made vastly obsolete, records retained a different experience.

You're right, I just thought the wording was funny. "Someday I'll have a proper collection of records, but CD's are going the way of the phonebook." Despite their renaissance in certain niches they are still more or less an outmoded format.

For me CD's were never about being portable. I was born into the cassette era--I've never really known a listening format that hasn't been portable. I'm with Jorge--I enjoy having digital copies of my music, but I like the physical copy too.

I work for a phonebook publishing company by the way...for a more heaping helping of irony. I don't go a day without hearing someone working there say "When's the last time you opened a phonebook?".
