So psyched... just so fucking psyched for this. I'm pretty tempted to pull the trigger on the deluxe version.

I like this. Record an album and put it out right away-- don't announce it nine months in advance like it's the unveiling of a grand new building.

One thing in the preorder that seems odd to me is the WAV vs. MP3 option. Because the Newspaper album package comes with the album on CD (assuming it's not b-sides or something), paying an extra $5 for WAVs seems silly.

More bands should do it this way.

I'd love that.

You work on Sundays?...that sucks, man. Good thing Radiohead's decided to brighten that up.

yeah i would say most people are going to opt for the mp3 but i think the reason for the option is two things: the first: i recall people complaining about the low quality mp3 they made available for in rainbows (even though it was name your own price), so now they have the option to pay for wav. second: believe it or not, but there are people out there that dont have mp3 player or may still prefer to play most of their music on cd, so this way can d/l the wav and burn it. it makes sense to have options.

What doesn't make sense is to charge so much for WAV vs. MP3. People will argue that it costs more due to bandwidth as the files are bigger etc. but it's bullshit, a good use of p2p technology would make this completely negligeable.

Besides how cool it is of what they're doing, I'm equally excited because I have no idea what to expect for music. Completely blank slate for this one.

Same. I haven't been this excited about a new album from any band in forever. All this time I just thought I liked music less as I got older - it's good to know that's not the case...

Looking forward to the album, but the format is a big thumbs-up to what I said all along: the whole 'give it away free' thing wasn't an ethical move but a publicity stunt. This time the game is 'make more money'.

Quote:
5. TAILBACK ON THE LUNAR EXPRESS
Radiohead’s most challenging composition yet. Consisting in its totality of a single note on an acoustic guitar played in a metronomic four beats to the bar, it reputedly took the group two years just to build the studio set-up that would allow them to create the perfect take, during which time Nigel Godrich had three nervous breakdowns and began hallucinating that he was a tick on the rump of Aztec king Montezuma.

Oh yeah, completely. I'm not complaining, I just remember all the people praising Radiohead for being ethical (unlike Pearl Jam and their deal with death, sorry Target). This happens and everyone drops their principles, just because it's Radiohead. They can do what they like.

I don't know... I thought I read somewhere that they made an average of $8.XX on each copy of In Rainbows that was downloaded via the pay what you want model. If that's the case, charging exactly $9 for the download makes perfect sense.

Again, absolutely. In retrospect, the plan made a hell of a lot of money. But before we were able to look back, there were plenty of people praising Radiohead's ethical principle of 'give it away free'. Apparently, thanks to Radiohead, we were returning to the Indie aesthetic of support the underdog, the broke, the common man etc. These people really shat on PJ for wanting to make money. I remember things like 'If only PJ did what Radiohead did.' My feelings were that if PJ did what Radiohead did, they probably wouldn't make a dime.
