There, I said it.

Most people cover it as if it actually were a religious song and try to hard to cope that enlightment thing and to show off how awesome his/her voice is. But it seems clear to me that the song is about a failed relantionship that meant a lot and Cohen, with his limited vocal skills, is more worried at expressing all the mixed feelings of anger, frustration, bitter sarcasm, melancholy and even the joy of remembering good moments.

I prefer Cohen's take to Buckley's.

There, I said it. I'd say it again if I had to.

I can dig it. I agree that too many people try to emphasize the gospel quality to it.

I actually watched on as a family with very nice voices sang this without any hint or irony or awareness together, huddled around a piano between sermons in an old Chicago church. I didn't have the heart to ask them what the hell they were doing.

It's the Buckley guitar that makes the Buckley version the best, people.

Buckley's version. Any day, any play...

I'll bet Cohen himself would even agree.

My priest does a pretty good job. Also a big fan of that "Christ has died, Christ is risen" jawn.

I'd pay to see a mass with people singing

And remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
