This album deserves its own thread.

Probably my favorite album of 2009. "Shiva" ftw.

I like it as well. I really enjoy how it flows so well and has a story to tell. It works better as a whole for me then as individual pieces.

Only a couple songs really stick out to me though so I don't put it up in my top 10 fav albums this year, but i think it is really nice. Just not so sure how much i'll go back and listen to it a year from now.

The album tells an explicit story (in first and second person narrative) of a man losing a loved one to bone cancer and watching her die in the Sloan Kettering Cancer Ward while he is beside her. Memories, regret and grief occur throughout the album.

Epilogue

Bear

Sylvia

Clearly ripping off PJ's The End

i've seen them live. they do not wear antlers on stage.

also, this comment showed up on what.cd (peter is the lyricist, front man):

Quote:
if anyones cares, the songs are about peter and his longtime childhood girlfriend who was diagnosed with cancer when they were kids, he stuck by her side through out her illness, they got engaged, she got better, then she cheated on him and left. makes the album MUCH more intense to listen to knowing the background in my opinion...hes a friend. just thought id share since so many of the reviews have gotten it wrong (cough cough pitchfork) and it makes for a much more intense and intimate album.

take that for what it's worth, but it makes sense given the narrative of the album.

definitely my favorite record this year.

and both The End and Hospice clearly rip off The Freshman by formative 90's supergroup The Verve Pipe.

I saw these guys in Boston a while back and they played a few (four, I think) of the new songs. All sounded pretty different from Hospice, but they were also all promising. For what it's worth though, the Hospice songs don't sound anything like Hospice either when played live.

They couldn't really make another hospice. Thematically it would be kind of silly, oh my uncle got real sick too, and the sounds are really tied in to the subject too.
