"PI" almost feels more like a proper Pumpkins album than a B-sides collection to me. I don't get that same feeling from any other "rarities" album, even though I own a handful that cut for cut I probably like better.

Off the top of my head I can only really think of Oasis' Masterplan which contained several songs that should have been album cuts or even stand alone singles.

I picked up the PI reissue. Is there any other b-sides album as strong as this?
Incesticide.
Though I'm not a huge Pumpkins fan.
I love Nirvana but I always thought Incesticide was pretty spotty even if it was probably a more true representation of that band than something like Nevermind. Aneurysm, Sliver and Dive are up amongst their best work though.

I forgot about "Incesticide"--that feels like a proper album too, so much so that I often forget it's actually an odds and ends thing. It's probably because both "Incesticide" and "Pisces," despite being "compilations" in essence, still draw from an extremely narrow period of each band's history. In fact, both directly preceded an album that marked a huge songwriting leap for each band. Kind of interesting closet-cleaning statements in that regard.
That said, as a pretty big admirer of both Nirvana and the Pumpkins, I think "Pisces" is the much stronger album.

That early 1988 material (Beeswax, Mexican Seafood, Hairspray Queen, etc.) collected on the second half of the album is some of my favourite Nirvana material.

That's maybe the one corner of Nirvana's discography that just doesn't do much for me. I like their noisy, freaky side, but I just don't think many of those songs are very good.
That said, I just listened to "Beeswax" on YouTube for the first time in years, and read along to the lyrics. As a child I never understood why "Incesticide" had one of those Parental Advisory labels. Now I get it. Yeesh.

I always thought the Incesticide/BBC version of "Aneurysm" was limp and weak compared to the b-side version, but I guess they wanted to give the fans something different. I know that many folks disagree. And including "Downer" was a fucking stupid decision, since most people already had it on the "Bleach" CD. Surely they could have added "Token Eastern Song" or something. These two things prevent the album from being perfect IMO.

I definitely agree that the SLTS b-side version of Aneurysm is far superior to the BBC take, I don't know how anyone could think otherwise.
I don't think it's perfect either. I agree that Downer was a dumb inclusion ahead of any number of songs: Token Eastern Song, If You Must, Pen Cap Chew, the January 1988 version of Spank Thru, etc. I guess it was so people who had already bought Bleach before the reissue weren't forced to rebuy it again for one extra track?

I know that's why they did it, but it's still stupid and short-sighted. As far as 99% of the fanbase is concerned, Downer is the last song on Bleach. I don't think they were looking that far ahead.
I would love to hear a good mix of "Token Eastern Song". Adam Kaspar's mix sounds like a bad stereo mix from the 60's. Total shit.
And yeah, "Spank Thru" definitely should have been on there. Major omission.

Oddly enough, I'm part of the 1%. My first copy of Bleach was a cassette. When I bought the CD I thought it was so stupid that they would have the same song on 2 different albums. I was about 12--it was a source of major contemplation.

Any news on the next reissue?
No date but ...
Quote:
Corgan recently informed Crestfallen via email that the MCIS reissue will feature up to 75 unreleased tracks/ alternate mixes, which will come in the form of three extra CDs and may also be packaged with a concert DVD. So for those of you keeping score at home — that’s a six-disc package. In other Pumpkins back-catalog news, there is also an expanded ‘Aeroplane Flies High’ reissue in the works and live releases planned for the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC).

I love Billy Corgan's guitar sound as I get older.
It's fuckin great. Even on songs I don't care for, his sound is always impressive to me. And Chamberlain's drums are the perfect foil.
I think it's a testament to Chamberlain's drumming that they kept him in the band when his fashion sense and that mullet were so terrible and out of place with the rest of the band.
