Pitchfork reports that Fiona Apple's long-awaited fourth album will be titled The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do. This is still shorter than the title of her 1999 sophomore album, best known as simply When The Pawn... Apple's new record is expected to be released by Epic Records in June. Apple will play twice at SXSW this week and a short U.S. tour in late March.

Fiona Apple 2012 Tour Dates
15 - Austin, Texas @ Central Presbyterian Church (SXSW)
19 - Chicago, Ill. @ Lincoln Hall
21 - Washington, D.C. @ Sixth and I
23 - Brooklyn, N.Y. @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
24 - Atlantic City, N.J. @ Music Box
26 - New York, N.Y. @ Bowery Ballroom
27 - Boston, Mass. @ Royale

Singer Performs Seven Years After Her Last Album

AUSTIN, Texas — At turns frenetic, contemplative and whimsical, Fiona Apple made her return to the stage Wednesday at the South By Southwest Music Conference and Festival.

The singer-songwriter debuted a handful of new songs from her upcoming album slated to be released this summer at NPR's showcase at Stubb's Barbecue.

The show was one of the most anticipated at South By Southwest this year, and a large crowd turned out to her early evening set. It's been five years since Apple played a live show outside of Los Angeles and seven years since her last album "Extraordinary Machine." She's got a second performance at a Pitchfork showcase in a church scheduled at SXSW before hitting the road for a short eight-date tour Sunday in Chicago.

Apple talked very little with the crowd during the performance, joking that she may have forgotten to sing the second verse of a new song, but pleased fans with some of their favorites, including "Criminal," "Fast As You Can" and "Sleep to Dream."

She turned in a spirited performance, overcoming a muggy evening and muddled sound that left her lyrics inaudible occasionally to many in the crowd. Wearing a black dress with a pink tank top underneath and her hair in a ponytail, she used a mug of hot tea to ease her voice through the final few songs. At one point she laid her head on her piano for about 45 seconds, then lifted it slightly as she watched rapturously as her guitar player finished off a song.

Twitter was afire with fans around the country expressing dismay at not being able to attend the event, but videos of her performance and the new songs were quickly fed to the Internet.

She's great but her career makes no sense whatsoever. I'm looking forward to the new album.

It is vexing, to say the least.

Does Fiona Apple have the most lopsided "Number of Albums Released" to "Number of Total Words Used in Album Titles" ratio in music history?

why do you think that??
i think its great when an artist like her takes time to make an album or a movie ot whatever.
sure, i would like more from her, but that´s what makes her special.

Extraordinary Machine was finished and then rejected by the label and then leaked and then rerecorded (so there are essentially 2 versions of the same "finished" album floating around). The new one has been done for over a year and still remains unreleased. What is up with all of this nonsense? Write, record, release dammit. I don't mind waiting if the end product is good (and it usually is with her) but I can't help but think we should have at least another great album or 2 from her by now.

for EM , the label was the problem...for this one, i don´t know, it seems she was saying kind of the same.
i don´t care how much it takes her to make a record, im happy with her doing stuff,...i prefer her to do more live shows.
Fiona reminds me of terrence malick in a way.

Yes.

Nah, I'm sure there are a few post-rock bands that have her beat.

Is it just me or is she looking more and more like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?

I'd still make an honest woman out of her.
