I originally intended this to be a thread about Tyagaraja, a local musician that specializes in eastern-tinged ballads. Instead, I thought it might be a good idea to share everyone's favorite local and unheard of bands that for whatever reason are very talented but can't seem to garner national attention.
Here's what I originally posted when this thread was called simply "Tyagaraja," to kick things off:
I really hope this guy makes it. He's a staple here in Houston and gets most of his exposure in traditional ways; in-store performances, guest spots on local radio, flyers, that sort of thing. Cosmic Jelly, for sure, but I think his sincerity is quite refreshing. He wears his influences all the way down his sleeve, but he just sings it so well.

That sounds like just the thing this thread needs. By all means, share!

We have cities in Australia too you know
The Jezabels would be the best recent band out of my city. Been following them for a couple of years now, after 3 very satisfying EPs they released their debut album last year which recently beat Goyte to win the prestigious Australian Music Prize.
Don't think they've been to the US yet, but they're starting to build a bit of following in the UK/Europe.
Unique sound with intelligent lyrics, if I were to sum them up I'd say Kate Bush meets Arcade Fire meets PJ Harvey. Check em out:
Meet you all bleary and all fuck'd up Delivered to drink at a bar I cut the hair of the armpits and toenails called you sweetheart I taught all auto-reverse life and translational movement that makes the earth spin I told you that the important thing is to compete but will kill you if you do not slam win
You were now the most important thing that ever happened to me right now, in my whole life A paradox of the imperfect, complex with the theory of relativity In a crucial moment a wise learned to know the whistling thrush knew And who amafagafar the mafagafinhos a good amafagafigador will be.
Told that the pediatrician is the doctor responsible for the health of the foot The zoista cares for Zoio and optician God forbid I will never touch my For you, you are a mythological beast with kinky hair similar to Medusa I said this rhyme prac with the sum of the square of the legs equals the fucking hypotenuse
You were now the most important thing that ever happened to me right now, in my whole life A paradox of the imperfect, complex with the theory of relativity In a crucial moment a wise learned to know the whistling thrush knew And who amafagafar the mafagafinhos a good amafagafigador will be.
I founded the International Association Protection of the Butterflies of Afghanistan I tasted a B plus C that Apple of one's eye Have no period. Give a dish of wheat and practical two tigers see the animals fighting is cool as fuck For the "strip and put" lets get life 'll always be your slave-to-Job
Just when you were almost understand What the hell I'm talking about. the song is ending and there's Creuzebek lowering the volume and you do not understand anything anyway why when you are in your home right now music will be shorty and you will not understand anything not even know what I'm talking about this pile of crap now it's all ... fuck, let's stop this talk boring! C'mon, I'm not holding more my throat hurts I have to do there gargle with vinegar let a fart in here (holly fuck!) Stinky is the environment my fingers are numb For God's sake, stop this shit!
Mamonas Assassinas (Translated as a Brazilian satirical phrase of ambiguity between "Boobs" and "Castor Oil Plant" known in some parts of Brazil such as "Mamona") was a satirical Brazilian rock band. Their lyrics, music and live performances were as famous as their tragical end: on March 2, 1996, the plane in which they were flying, crashed into the Cantareira mountain range, near São Paulo, killing all band members. The band's name carries a double-entendre as, in Portuguese mamonas can be either the name of the Castor oil plant, which contains the highly toxic comount ricin (their logo incorporated a castor bean) or the augmentative for mamas, meaning breasts (which were prominently pictured on the album cover). The band even translated the name into English as "Killer Big Breasts".
Mamonas Assassinas members employed a humorous mixture between a wide range of styles. They often borrowed elements from other music, among which were the main riff of the Portuguese Vira ("Vira-Vira"), Northeastern Brazilian rhythms like forró ("Jumento Celestino"), Mexican music ("Pelados em Santos"), heavy metal ("Débil Metal"), sertanejo ("Bois Don't Cry"), and even pagode ("Lá Vem o Alemão"). This combination can be easily checked at their videos, where various references to many cultures were found.

All of them were born in Guarulhos, except Dinho, who was born in Irecê, a town from Bahia state. Alecsander Alves (known as Dinho) - vocals Alberto Hinoto (Bento Hinoto) - guitar Samuel Reis de Oliveira (Samuel Reoli; "Reoli" is a contraction of the last names Reis and Oliveira) - bass guitar Júlio César Barbosa (Júlio Rasec; Rasec is "César" spelled backwards) - keyboards, backing vocals Sérgio Reis de Oliveira (Sérgio Reoli; Samuel's older brother) - drums
Seriously, One of the best Brazilian bands, and they were from my town... Some parents of mine even got to know this guys. Funny as hell to. HB got to agree with me.
