can anyone explain to me why there are so many different names for techno? people are calling it "dubstep" now? drum n bass?

Well if I went into a record store asking the clerk to help me find some ambient music or some IDM, and he came back with an album full of dubstep, I'd be pretty annoyed.

I must admit I get a little confused as well. I like some of the French techno bands (M83 mostly) and don't know exactly what they are classified as, particularly since a lot of these bands get played on "college" radio over here. I almost want to call them alt-techno or something stupid.

Well here's what I mean:

Ambient:


Intelligent Dance Music (IDM):


Dubstep:


In my mind, the type of beats and rhythms distinguish the three, but there is a lot of subtle things going on here that a serious electronic fan like flavdave could probably help you out with much better than I could.

Those aren't the only three genres, of course. Though I can't name many more off the top of my head. Am I allowed to call trip-hop "techno?"

To this day two of my favorite albums of all time are two trance albums I picked up in the early 90's. Absolutely beautiful...
