I've been streaming this at work for the last few days. I'm in love with it...I had unconsciously become very disillusioned in terms of what to expect. As much as I love these guys...even Efrim's solo album is interesting...I just couldn't see how this could live up to what they put out ten-fifteen years ago.
This is fantastic. Although, to be fair, at work I listen to it with my AKGs. At home, I played it for my wife over computer speakers and it sounded radically different. Really, some of the subtleties of the sound collage moments were lost entirely. It made a difference...she loves GYBE, and her reaction was tepid at best.
show was great, except for the shitty Austin scenesters and their fucking ironic beards and cell phones. the two people in front of me could not have been less interested in the band, and were too busy talking and writing their blog reviews or whatever. luckily they felt that 45 minutes was enough time to qualify for having seen GYBE, and moved on.
the bartender screaming "1,2,1,2,3,4!" at the most innapropriate times was a little funny though.
it's beautiful for sure but every album since Are You There i've been hoping they would try something a little out of their comfort zone. They've basically been doing the same songs but just adding more strings etc to the mix. It's become too dramatic for me.
I still dig what they do and see them when they come to town but the albums ain't like the old ones. Guess they're just stale to me.
I dunno guys, there are some beautiful and spectacular moments on this album. But there are too many long sections where nothing happens but a long crescendo of noise and feedback. I know, that's the point for some of you -- fine -- but the second half has, I think, two long sections of this crescendo, so that it's all you remember from the second half. I personally didn't find much of a pay off, no explosion, all teasing and no orgasm. But I'll have to listen to it again.
GYBE is one of my best live experiences of all time and this record show nothing of the greatness they can deliver. Very dissapointed and found myself expecting more the whole time.
