Pearl Jam: "World Wide Suicide"
genre: rock
Meet the new Pearl Jam, same as the Pearl Jam that grungy fuddy-duddies cut bait on once the group became insular and phrenological. Though such a position wrongly excludes more than half of the band's catalog from any sort of love, those fair-weather fans might be in the right when it comes to this song. The group's efforts to quote rock unquote sound pretty flat-- you'll believe that this is the group's eighth album. As for what the lyric sheet holds, Eddie's attempts to zing a certain jug-eared preznit one more time ("Tell you to pray while/ The devil's on his shoulder") are equally lackluster. The belabored baseball metaphors on Riot Act were a better vehicle for beating around the bush than this well-intentioned what-is-it-good-for gnashing. If this single is indicative of what Pearl Jam's self-titled album has to offer, Clive Davis might have to spring for Rick Parashar's magical flange to recoup his investment. [David Raposa]

Yeah, honestly, fuck taking pitchfork's reviews with a grain of salt, take it with some penicillin and a shot of whiskey. It's not that I mind a bad Pearl Jam review, it's that I mind a pretentious, ridiculous review of something that they probably don't even know that much about. But I guess we're the ones perpetuating their hipsterdom by reading it in the first place.

pitchfork is the indie-kids favorite website, right? i dont follow this stuff well and dont wanna be confused.
It's a place where hipster-wannabe's go if they are incapable of making any musical decisions on their own, yet still want to fuel their superiority complex. Their review's hold about as much water as Rolling Stone's.

Oh God, everyone's got their panties in a bundle. And I suppose that if Pitchfork (which put on a very, very good festival last year) would have given this 4 or 5 out of 5 stars, people would have entirely different views. This review is dead-on.
Believe me, the folks at Pitchfork really, really want to like this album. They respect the hell out of Pearl Jam, particularly their willingness to champion bands such as Sleater-Kinney, Sparta, My Morning Jacket, etc.

Wait a minute, pitchfork didn't like a single from an established mainstream act?
OMFG!!1!
Exactly. I use pitchfork (and sometimes rolling stone) to find out about new bands I've never heard of, but rarely trust their judgement on established groups.
MF, are those really Jenny Lewis' funbags in your pic? Cause if so, yours is my favorite.
