Post subject: Even Flow (rant/a few questions to bide time until May)

I was listening to the early 1998 interviews pertaining to the band and band history on pearljamlive.com - if you love SVT that's a fucking awesome companion - you really get to hear the tug of war between Stone and Ed on how they'd like to go about doing things... but Jeff said something that kinda surprised me. He said they did something like 100 takes on Even Flow and really butchered it - that the best song on the record ended up with the worst take, hence the re-recorded version. I've had people tell me that they like the album version more, or that the solo on the album isn't as good as the re-recorded version, yadda yadda yadda.
Everyone has their tastes, but I was wondering what people think of how it's sounding live now and what the best version they've ever heard in concert is, based on the city, what Mike does, whether or not Ed can remember the lyrics, etc.
The versions from the SA tour are my favorite thus far, and I kinda think that after Mike's done, but before Stone kicks it back into high gear, that Mr. Metronome should be allowed to go off on his drums. Or at least, pass the baton to Jeff. Giving him one solo line in Leaving Here really isn't fair.
I just really like how this song seems to be an example of the band's willingness to improvise and keep their older material fresh and alive, but another question would be... if not Even Flow, then what other tune that's customarily played live would you like to see the band turn into a vehicle for jamming (other than the standard songs like Daughter, YL, Black, Porch and at times RVM, etc.) I think In My Tree has real possiblities for that. Or if they ever relearn Why Go, that could work if for no other reason than because its got a similar groove to EF.

Chicago 2000 i think is the best. The beginning of the song is the best ive hear IMO. Everything was so cohesive. Killer mike solo of course (i like it when he goes from minor to major at the end). Eddie's vocals were good, and not butchered. My favorite.

dont forget Alive and Crazy Mary...I'd like to see them play Deep and Present Tense more though.

Evenfow is played a little too much and has lost a bit for me. however the Wachovia 05 had some life breathed into it. Motly because of Matt in the Jam, He did some pretty cool drumming there.

I do think the rerecorded even flow is better than the original (although I still like it), but it's a totally different song live. It's hard to even compare them. It is ALWAYS a show highlight for me--everyone sings along and mike's solos are always awesome. Something new that started in 05 (only a few shows I think) was having the audience take the last chorus, which was really great too.
Uniondale 03 is THE definitive live version of this song. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't heard it in a while.

i prefer the re-recorded even flow. more energy. dave a plays it better than krusen (but krusen plays alone better than dave a, so its even )
its not as good these days live, because of speed, + matt (although i am a Stallion) doesnt play it as well as dave a did.

they play it faster and let Mike solo for like half an hour, which is even more boring for the rest of the band except Eddie.

i like when they let Jeff do the bassline for a little bit before the whole band kicks back in after the bridge

Personally I prefer the slower versions they did back in the day. Nowadays PJ seems to be rushing through to see how fast they can play it.
If your band had to play a shitty song, wouldn't you try to get it over with as fast as possible, too?

Ed said after the solo at one of the 05 shows that this is why they still play even flow, so I'm going to side with peeps on this one
