Post subject: life wasted / inside job (bookend album opener and closer)

anybody see the symbolism in having life wasted open the album (speaking of the past) and inside job close the album (speaking of the present and future)
Initially, I thought Severed Hand would be a better albim opener, especially with the first minute that builds and then takes off, but now I understand why they chose Life Wasted to open, Inside Job to close, and the Wasted Reprise in the middle to tie them all together...

Ya, I definitely see that. I've mentioned it before that I think this album is somewhat of a concept album, and this is one of the reasons why.
Definately. And songs like Gone and Unemployable maintain that exact storyline. It might not be a concept record, exactly, but it's about as close as you can possibly get and not be. In that respect, it has the cohesive message and feel that Vitalogy and No Code had...which is insanely badass, my friends.

Ya, it's not like Eddie woke up one morning and thought "hey, we should write a concept album!" But it feels like Ed had a lot to say on this record, and it deals with one big theme; the state of America in the 21st century. I can't think of any other PJ album where a good majority of its songs fit into one theme like that.

we all dismissed this at the time but there is no other explaination. His hair was too short.

riot act sucks in comparison to this cause they rushed through it. there are stories out there of them not really putting much effort into it, of matt losing his headphones playing so wildly to save you and having to watch the everyone's hands, of hearing the snare rattle during guitar parts, of eddie doing one-offs on vocal takes and wanting to move on...
you can tell they went over this with a fine-tooth comb and it shows. i loved yield, so i was really let down by binaural because it seemed like they were more concerned with the sound rather than the songs. riot act was a little better, but this record is great...
that being said, i'm finding myself being forced to listen to other bands and other records to retain a sense of sanity. if i didn't, i don't think i'd listen to anything else than these songs for quite some time.

Has anyone mentioned the similarity between Wasted Reprise and Fallen Angel off of Mirrorball? It's a direct pull off the Neil Young record. But I guess if anyone's entitled to do that, it'd be Pearl Jam.
