I searched and couldn't find a proper "Gone" topic
(search tool or browsing through the first 5 pages didn't give me a result, except "question about gone", which I think is less than this song deserves, sorry if I missed something, I'm sure Stip will merge it then )
This song is awesome guys. It lacks just a little power to be the real follow-up to Given to Fly. But it comes damn close. the slow start, the build-up, the chorus, the wave that falls and has to rebuild, the little guitar solo that is a bit hidden in the outro (just like GTF). Boom is also really awesome on this one. If they can add a little power when the verse goes into the chorus (which I'm sure they can and will) I think this could become one of my favorite live PJ songs. Fantastic! I'm very happy they included this in the album. And I'm very happy they did exactly with the demo what I hoped and knew they could do with it.

For whatever reason gone is not searchable in the database--I know that there are at least 4 other threads on it made in the past but they won't come up.
Gone was a big suprise for me. I was shocked at how good they made it. It's currently my 4th favorite song on the record, although I expect that Marker in the sand will overtake it by weeks end. I remember listening to it for the first time and got a huge shit eating grin on my face when they started the build for the chorus. FINALLY they've gone back to these kinds of choruses. It's not given to fly, but it's better than In Hiding

I like it better than GTF. I think I'd put it up there with In Hiding and I Got ID as one of my favorite PJ songs of all time. It's got the darkness of Ten with the pop sound of GTF and Better Man during the chorus. I'm trying to decide if this song would be a good single. The verse might be a little too slow and dark for radio, and it takes awhile before it reaches the catchy hook during the chorus. hmm. great song though. my favorite from the album.

I'm hearing that as well.....but I wonder if it doesn't take from even earlier stuff. The chorus guitar somehow flows like they did on Daughter.....it's in there.....I can't get past it. Either way, what an incredible song, they just capture everything the way it's supposed to be.

that's some pretty fulsome praise right there. Better than GTF. Do you think some of this might be the new song high?

well, I'm not a huge GTF fan anyways. I like it, but it's not one of my favorites. So it wasn't too hard for Gone to surpass it.
fair enough--I said I liked it more than In Hiding, but In Hiding is middle of the pack for me

I've been thinking about whether or not it is single material, and I don't think it is. I think a number of songs would work better, namely Marker. Obviously that's not to say Gone isn't a great song, because it is.
I was also really surprised at how much the band added to the song. Unlike Thumbing My Way, the full band version is way better than the solo.

You mean, "Unlike Thumbing My Way, it's good."

Love this music. The only thing keeping this from becoming a top tier song for me is the lyrics.
"When the gas in my tank feels like money in the bank".
I usually never let lyrics affect a pj song negatively, but this one is too much for me. I was at Atlantic City and remember thinking the music was cool but that I hated the lyrics. I didn't think much of it because he said he'd written it the night before. I figured he'd fix them. If the lyrics were more vague, this song would reach epic status.

i'l be honest, i pretty much hated it when i heard it from AC. i thought the demo was an improvement, but i still didnt like it and didnt think a full band version would be any good.
i was wrong. i really like it. wouldnt put it in the top tier of songs on the album, but i still think its really good.

I've gushed over this song before, but I have no problem doing it again. I agree, this song doesn't quite soar as much as GtF (although we've yet to hear it decent quality, i would say a nice stereo system and CD quality will add a lot) but it's definitely one of their best, soaring choruses in a long-ass time. I agree with Stip, it surpasses In Hiding easily. I've said in the past that the chorus for In Hiding is perfect while the verses are choppy and weak (the music at least, the lyrics are great).
I love the slow, sad start, the buildup with the pounding drums and then that explosion into the chorus. Stip's right, that's a feeling they haven't put out in a long time. It's just a great song to listen to and sing along too. Sweeeet.

I kind of like that lyric--since the whole song is about driving to escape it works. It's got a Born to run springsteen era feel to it (although those lyrics are much better than gone)
it is too bad he didn't play around with them a little more though

this is really the only song on the album that i cannot get into... i don't mind the chorus but the verse kills me... i'm not that big fan of the music or the melody... there's just something about it and i just can't get into it... imo there are a lot better quality songs on the new album that just blow me away... i don't know... i guess i'll take a piss during this song when they play it in cleveland and detroit
