Here's something to talk about. This may have been discussed already..if so I apologize.
Missouri legislators in Jefferson City considered a bill that would name Christianity the state's official "majority" religion.
(...)
The resolution would recognize "a Christian god," and it would not protect minority religions, but "protect the majority's right to express their religious beliefs.
The resolution also recognizes that, "a greater power exists," and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, "justified recognition."
State representative David Sater of Cassville in southwestern Missouri, sponsored the resolution, but he has refused to talk about it on camera or over the phone.
I live in Missouri. If this comes to pass I'm moving.

I know I live in what is percieved to be a redneck backwards state, but I was a little shocked to hear about this. The sad thing is most people I've talked to about this don't seem to have a problem with it. They think I'm anti-christian. They don't seem to understand how big of a backwards step this is.

I'd like to pass a bill that names "Idiocy" as the offical majority worldview of Americans.

Can "self-interest with negative externality" be a major tenet of this official worldview?
That phrase has no sass!

Does the Constitution trump state law in this case? I'm not so sure they can't make an official religion, so long as they don't force people to practice it.
Missouri is an interesting state. I hear it was legal to kill a Mormon there up until 1976.
Well, at least they got one thing right.
Hey..don't forget Missouri's #1 contribution to modern america...Bob Barker. Where would we be without The Price Is Right?
and i didn't think i could get any more nauseous this AM
If Bob Barker is the # 1 thing to come out of Missouri, and his gameshow could easily be renamed:
"Who's the Best Consumer?"
shouldn't "Capitalism" be their target state religion?

Yes, the First Amendment applies to the States, and this would be the very definition of "establishment" of religion.

It's not the federal level congress that is doing it. And the Constitution says something like "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people". So... if the states are not prohibited by the Constitution to declare an official religion (and are not inhibiting the practice of other religions) then maybe the states can do this. Who's our resident lawyer?

The First Amendment has been applied to the states through the 14th Amendment. I can't recall the specific case.
