i like the first song but after that there are some cool parts but overall i'm not too keen on it. the only dream theater cd that i really like is six degrees of inner turbulence
The one that meshes with my taste is Images and Words. Change of Seasons and parts of Awake are decent. The other stuff, like their new album, is pretty bad.

Overplaying, cheesy singing, Berkley graduate cheese puffs. The instrumental stuff they do is ok, but James LaBrie is a mega-cheese puff. I'm sorry, but when I saw them in concert (I went to see Satriani), he came out in leather pants and a flowing white whirt and had a fan blowing on him to make his hair flow. C H E E S Y.

James is one of my favorite singers... I like his flowing hair and shirts.

I don't understand why everybody hates complex music. For some reason people who like "punk" are the first to hate DT's unconventionality. One of my friends who swears by unconventional music, actually remarked, "Why is there an opera singer in a rock band?" I had a hard time getting used to him, but now he's one of my favorite singers. Just listen to the Frameshift album and it becomes clear (no longer confined to the metal format).
Also, there's no such think as "overplaying." Whether the music is good or not has nothing to do with how fast you play. In other words, while playing slow does not make bad music, neither does playing fast. If anything, being able to play complex music opens the door for more possibilities. And not all DT songs are fast and complex. In fact, most aren't that much more complex than most metal outside of their standard time signature changes and song layering. Listen to "Another Day," "Lines in the Sand," "Trial of Tears," "Space Die Vest," "The Spirit Carries On," "Misunderstood," "Endless Sacrifice"...None of them are very complex, and are all incredible songs by anyone's standards.
Anyhow, I just get kind of tired of the "complex=bad" attitude that many people have.

Really? There are a few (eg, Spiders) that are pretty metal-ish, but most of it seems pretty easy-going... Maybe that's because songs like La Mer, Message From the Mountain, and Origins & Miracles stick out more to me.

I love complex playing. I'm a huge jazz and fusion fan. And I also love complex rock music, but it needs to have substance in order for me to like it.
I am not a fan of rock bands who play a million notes just because they can. I love a good guitar solo, and I love instrumentalists like Joe Satriani, but most prog bands do nothing for me.
That being said, Rush is my other favorite band w/ PJ.

That's fine if you honestly don't think they have substance. I do, personally, but to each his own. What I get tired of is those who don't like them because they're complex, and don't care to look past that.
