Assuming Pearl Jam is your favorite band, where after that do your musical tastes lie? After reading a bunch on Tool, it has got me curious. I'm wondering how your musical tastes have changed over the years etc? Has it had an effect on how you now regard PJ?

Its the genre of music I like. Pearl Jam has always been my favourites. Strong guitars, lyrics, good beat, all very important. If anything I have got into heavier stuff as the years have gone past

for me, there's only two bands i appreciate as much as pearl jam. radiohead and dave matthews band.

i can get into most of the stuff thats considered "classic rock" and most stuff influenced by "classic rock"

I think finding Pearl Jam at the age of 12 back in 1991 really helped broaden my musical tastes during my teenage years. By their participation on projects like Sweet Relief, and the wide network of bands they associated with by touring, etc., I was introduced to the likes of Victoria Williams, Giant Sand, the Jayhawks, Grant Lee Buffalo and a host of others. Then everything branched out from there.

My musical tastes now as a musician/writer myself include everything from pre-WWII acoustic blues to Iranian classical, from Sufjan Stevens to Built to Spill to Django Reinhardt to Billie Holiday to A Tribe Called Quest. It's all good.

I no longer consider Pearl Jam to be the "best" band in the world, because I think it's really hard to compare bands to each other in that way, especially if they're trying to achieve different things. But they'll always be one of my favorites.

And the new album is absolutely one of their very best.

Pearl Jam has never been my favorite band, actually. In high school that was an honor saved for Nirvana, and now, I don't really have a favorite. My tastes are all over the place, and if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Sonic Youth.

Well I guess for my 2 cents......

I've been into music deeply for as long as I can remember. When I was 9 and traveled to Mexico with my family, I remember buying AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" on 8 track, the price was virtually nothing. I had heard a little of them on the radio and it seemed to do something for me, before that it was the typical little kid shit music. After the next few years I got into alot of stuff. I like so many different styles of music, some if I stated, would probably get me hate mail. But bands for me have come and gone. Pearl Jam is the only one that I have listened to since it's inception. I grow to enjoy them more each day. Yes they have had a few short comings the last 8 years in my opinion, but that happens to any band, even the best bands. I'm pleased beyond belief with this new record, I really didn't think it would be this amazing.

I guess my musical tastes constantly change......"Avenged Sevenfold" has now entered my life, maybe cause it takes me back to the 80's heavy metal guitar sound ( Randy Rhodes etc ). But Pearl Jam will always remain my #1.....never get bored.

I have always had a very straight-forward taste in music. All my favorites are classics:

-dylan
-r.e.m
-nirvana
-creedence
-alice in chains
-Radiohead
and a couple of norwegian bands (september when & Madrugada)

I got into music at the age of 14 in 92. PJ and Nirvana was the only reason for that. Pearl Jam has always been my favorite band (r.e.m comes close) and probably always will...

oh...about the norwegian band Madrugada. All pj fans should check them out. They have put out 4 albums and they kick ass! Have seen them live several times and they are really really good. The singer actually has a voice that probably outshines ed`s..

If I went by what bands are currently producing, my favs would be The White Stripes and Bright Eyes.

If I went overall, The Beatles, The Clash, Nine Inch Nails, Bright Eyes, and maybe a few others, would be on the list with Pearl Jam.

In high school I got really into Pearl Jam after having listened to standard alternative for awhile, then when I was 18 or so, I started getting into prog rock, now I'm kinda getting into scandinavian metal for some reason. So I basically listen to a mix of everything now, although I don't really listen to the standard rock much. I've recently listened to the Crowes a bit inspired by the thread in OB, but I'm mostly into prog/metal type stuff now.

i think this is a very coool topic, seems like every PJ fan is unique in his musical tastes

since PJ is my nÂ°1 band, then there is a lot of bands fighting for the second place :

- DEFTONES. Don't call them "neo-metal" they deserve much better : Their style is very unique, mixing hardcore, metal, pop, new-wave & electro... whaouh !! :bammer:

- ...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD. Stoner rock band from Austin Texas, their last album Worlds Appart is the new Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness. Again, it mixes pure punk energy with really dark and pop melodies.

- BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB : The darkside of the Strokes, their self-titled album is a killer, and their last record has a lot to do with the music from the south of the USA.

Also I'm really into DEAD MEADOW (70's psyche-like rock band) WILDERNESS and FILMSCHOOL BIFFY CLYRO, QOTSA, MASSIVE ATTACK... And then jazz, i like all the music from the BLUE NOTE label, especially the period 1960-1970... and many others.

I always listen to music, i LOVE it i can't live without it ! And when I really don't know who to listen to, i always get back to PJ.. :wink:

pearl jam used to be my favorite band but hasn't been for a while now. my musical taste is kind of all over the place though, and a little hard to quantify. some of my favorite artists are mark lanegan, andew hill, tom waits, kris kristofferson, johnny cash, miles davis, willie nelson, and charles mingus. i'd say i listen to 50% jazz, 40% rock, 10% country (only the three artists mentioned above but they all have over 20 great albums that i listen to all the time)

i'm really into miles davis' "in a silent way" , i bought recently the complete sessions from this album, i'm also into kind of blue... Space, deep and relaxing music

.... and speaking of Andrew Hill, he is too "free-jazz"-oriented for me, i preffer other blue note artists who are more "hard bop" or "groove-oriented"... :oops:

i saw them live in paris during their "howl" tour, it was amazing... they started the show by playing 3 acoustic ballads from their last album, just one guitar and the voice... really cool, then they took the electric guitars and they rocked the place :bammer:
