What a really poignant film. I had always pretty much dismissed this whole subgenre as movies that I wasn't really interested in and could never relate to, so I didn't bother. But it was on HBO the other night, so I DVR'd it and watched it tonight. I was really impressed. It's a really moving, tragic drama. And the acting was tremendous--especially Cuba Gooding and Laurence Fishburn. Ice Cube was surprisingly good, too.

How about Ricky checking his lottery tickets while there's a car full of guys looking to shoot him?

So? He was a moron. He got a 710 on his SATs.
How does this make the movie any less poignant?
It makes it "less poignant" because the dialogue is, for the most part, lame....and the situations are completely manipulative and contrived.
showing the mother opening up his SAT score MINUTES after he gets shot is completely lame.
speaking of the SAT, the best was when the recruiter asks him about taking it and Ricky's like, "oh yeah I heard about that test".
what a dumb line
even better is Tre attempting to cross the street in front of his house - only to be threatened at gunpoint by the gangmembers in the car that almost hit him. That scene always kills me........
Watch "Don't be a Menace......" it completely spoofs and exposes this and other movies of this genre.

It's a movie. Every situation in every movie is "manipulated". There's a fucking script. These characters are stand-ins, used to represent an entire culture.

Why? It's making a point. It's a--say it with me now--met-a-phor. Would you have preferred it if the test scores cam the following week? What's the difference? It's a movie, that plot point was for dramatic effect.

Sure, there was some weak dialogue, but there was alos a lot of strong points. Almost any movie you can name, I could list some flaws.

Why? What is funny or "lame" about that scene?

What exactly about this genre needs to be "exposed"?

I like this movie. Definitely some good messages. There are some scenes that made me a little uncomfortable as in "uh what the fuck is going on?" Like when Tre comes into his girlfriend's house and starts punching the air for about 2 minutes. But overall I liked this movie
"Gimme my brother's ball back!"

Do I really have to explain this? I guess you couldn't tell that I was refering to how the movie manipulates the AUDIENCE. In this respect, the movie reduces itself to the black version of "Beaches".
The fact that you think those characters "represented a culture" is even funnier than the movie. Wow, you must have really learned a lot about the "hood".

it was totally uneccesary, heavy-handed, and reminded me of something from an after-school special. Metaphor? please tell me you're kidding.

I must admit that I LOVE most of the dialogue. I find it all very funny. This movie works much better as a comedy than as a drama.

Because it's a completely deserted residential street, and then all of a sudden, this car comes out of nowhere and almost hits him. Then before Tre can even blink, the guy lowers a windown and points a gun at him. It's completely over the top.

how cheesey all these movies are. They try to be dramas, but they end up becoming borderline comedies.
