I was wondering if anyone knows what guitar ed used in severed hand/wws i tried to watch the video again on youtube but apparently it was taken down due to copyright infringement? which is very odd.. anyways he used it in "masters of war" on their last letterman appearance, it's blue and white with a blue arrow on it. kay thanks.

it looks to be the same one that he has used for years, the black fender telecaster with the target between the pickups, and the tape arrow pointing up at it.
it looks alot more beat up that before, but it seems to be the same guitar.

I don't know if this was discussed in the SNL thread (I'm not reading 60 pages to find this little bit of minutae), but I was wondering why Ed put down his guitar during Severed Hand. I mean, he starts the song with it, puts it down, and then picks it up at the end. If he didn't need to play during the bulk of the song, I wonder why he didn't just sling it onto his back a la Springsteen instead of awkwardly taking it on and off.

Because Ed can sing better w/o a guitar in his hands

My idea is that at the opening he does that little intro with it. He takes it off to sing the song, and I agree he sings better without the guitar. Then after he finishes the last lyric they jam for like a minute and he'd rather be playing the guitar then doing his baby steps dance for that whole time. Especially cause the whole band is just jamming away he wants to be in on that fun!

Oh, I understand that he wants to play it during the parts he plays, and that's fine. It just seemed awfully awkward to physically take the thing off and put it down, then pick it back up again instead of simply holding it and not playing.
The Bon Jovi answer may be correct one for all I know.
