me and jason from touring van are going in together with some other folks and are going to try to pull off a full professional looking doc
this will be the second crack at it for both of us so it should be good because i think we have learned from out mistakes: he did the Touring Van movie last year and i did touring fans 2003 in well 2003
i think his movie is great and i think mine is ok as well but they are both very shaky and at times that makes it hard to watch--to solve this we are going to use a tripod for all shots- we are also going to use external mic's and possibly an external light
if anyone else wants film your own interviews-parties as long as its steady and sounds good we will be happy to use it--pm me if you are interested
but what we can really use is a couple of minutes of your time at some shows-we are not going to be filming the whole time but if you see the touring van, stop by and say whats up-say a few words for the film and you will be famous
anyway jason is the man when it comes to this movie- im just trying to do a little part to help-check out his itinerary at http://www.touringvan.com it says where he will be for both legs
any suggestions on how we could make it better then the other 2 let us know

Good luck gentlemen.

This documentary is going focus on the Pearl Jam fans and their interaction with each other, their experiences at shows, their dedication to the band, basically the whole phenomenon behind Pearl Jam fans. You guys know what I'm talking about.
I've got a pretty good idea of the direction of the film, but could always use some help. You guys have any suggestions on questions to ask while interviewing fans? pm me or email to jason@touringvan.com or to Kyle as well.
Remember this is purely about the fans and not the band.

Getting decent sound is one of the hardest challenges in filmmaking, IMO. Good external mic'ing can make a huge difference.
As far as using a tripod goes, that is also a good idea. However, my suggestion would be to not limit every shot to a tripod shot. There is a time and place. Some shots really do work better just by hand, while others work better on the tripod. Interviewing people usually works better with a still camera. But sometimes you're following people around or moving around some action, and in those cases a tripod makes no sense. An intelligent mix of both is a decent goal. Check out a few decent doco films and instead of paying attention to content, watch how they set shots, you'll get a lot of simple ideas pretty quick.
Good luck with the project! Maybe catch up with you at the Gorge.
The gorge will be the biggest party and I should be able to get a lot of footage....
On a side note, we are doing a big ceremony for the final check off of the touring van at the gorge, come gather around the van for this special occasion.
Won't be in Toronto, but I'll be at reading festival.. so look for me...

Also, look into a unipod, a single leg tripod that you can carry around easy enough and drop down when you need a bit extra stability.
You can get a decent shotgun mic that should handle most of your audio needs for a couple hundred bucks, if you have a camera that allows for external mics.

Is this project only about RMer's or all of the fans? I plan on hanging out with the RMer's in Camden, but so many are going to be there that they alone could provide a plethora of material.

this is a pearl jam fans doc.
it is all about the community and trying to capture the feeling of being surrounded by the fans-there is a common bond that we have above just all knowing the words to betterman
being a part of the rm community is a bonus-it will make it easier to break the ice with some people-doing this in the past it gets kind of old going around asking people if they want to be filmed-i got to meet a lot of really neat people but most are camera shy
hopefully the message boards are just another way to get the word out as well but it is about all jammers-even those synergy people

come on, where are the questions you want us to ask other fans? There must be something wanna know about other fans.
The great thing about PJ is the emotion the band seems to stir in people who love them. I think a simple question like "Why do you love PJ?" will spark an incredible amount of emotion and offer great theatre for your doco. Focus less on the partying and more on emotions and bonds people seem to forge at the shows.
PJ is the soundtrack to my life. They helped me beat drugs, get over my step-mother's death and get up the courage to win my wife's love. This is not uncommon. Just ask your subjects.
