Not trying to flame, just curious for discussion. Please note I lean poltically to the left, love much of what EV has written lyrically over the last 16 years, and am still a huge fan. I am so used to Ev's existance as frontman and mouthpiece of my favorite band in the world that I couldnt imagine it an other way. But let's be honest with ourselves. Do you feel remotely the same way as I do lately? The gist of what I am saying is that Eddie is just not as articulate or intelligent as I thought he was- some examples-

I am findng it harder and harder to seperate EV's outward activities from the music. It all started with the Nader grandstanding- a gross political miscalculation- he supported a candidate who took away votes from Gore and got Bush into office. The we hear nothing again from the Nader-Vedder partnership when he runs again in 2004. Then the song Bushleaguer, which is a horrible political statement (it makes no sense, music is horrible, and will be the most dated song in the catalog over time). Maybe Ev should take lessons from Neil on how to right a thrashing political statement that has subtlety (See "Ohio")

Next, EV's personal relationship runs contrary to one of my favorite songs on Vitalogy (wont go into it, but model roll model roll some models in blood?).
The last 3 PJ albums including the new one have had some lyrical stinkers (see LBC on riot act, a cringeworthy effort IMHO).

The last straw for me was that 8 mn J records promo interview. EV is just spewing some environmental BS that he doesn't even understand, while smoking a cig. no less. I mean, it is embarrassing to hear him talk lately. He simply made no logical sense as he spoke about "waves," "being along for the ride" and whatever else he was mumbling. Rock legends such as Mick Jagger and D Bowie seem infinitely more articulate when they open their mouths when compared to Ed's latest rantings.

I have been a PJ fan since late 1991, when Ten broke, and EV was always an idol. But I am becoming more aware of his intellectual flaws- he is a high school drop out who was lucky enough to know Jack irons, and have a great band behindhim to create 3-4 awesome albums. But Ed's antics have made him a cartoon of himself- he is the very tortured rock star he lampooned in the mid 90's on Vitalogy and that we all thought Kurt was. It is harder for me to listen to the music because of EV's antics.

I predict great things for this topic. ;)

Seriously, though, I do find it very difficult to listen to music that is inseparably connected to a belief that I don't necessarily agree with, so it's not surprising that people would be alienated by their more recent music.

I could give a fuck less what my favorite artists do outside of the music they give me.

Well, if you're talking about the "there's so much in the atmosphere" comment on the promo, he was talking about the atmosphere as in what's going on in the U.S. politcally. If its the other part, about the resources being used up soon, he's dead on, it's the truth. If we keep on at this pace, the earth can't keep up.

The satan's bed thing, i've said and thought many things 10 years ago that i realize now were ignorant. What's the saying? Hindsight is 20/20?

Don't like Ed's politics for the most part.

First post too long...not worth reading sorry.

Pearl Jam is politically and environmentally conscience, what, get out. It’s not like this is a sudden development and I honestly don’t how this can be embarrassing to you. So the guy speaks his mind on issues that he feels are important. I think the band in general has earned that right in my opinion. Now if you don’t agree with the statements that are being made well, that’s a different argument altogether.

i completely disagree with you.

and if you think nader 'took votes away' from gore and put bush in office, YOU, not eddie vedder, need some serious political teaching.

Nothing wrong with being political, I am just beginning to realize our frontman is not as bright as I thought he was. Sometimes I think he is really just a surfer/ gas station attendant cloaked as a rock star. Then I give him credit for the ambition to make PJ work in the early days, and the continued success they have had, which makes me think the contrary.

also, my friend, while eddie did drop out of high school, he worked and got his GED and for a short while went to community college.

It is in irrefuteable assertion that the Nader voter population was comprised disproportionately from the Gore vote population, in a similar way that Perot took GHWB votes in 1992. No Nader 2% means Gore wins the election. Geez, it wasnt that long ago, you already forgot?
