When and why was the 8 game playoff series in baseball started. When did it end? Was it only baseball?

i've never heard of a best of 8. i know they did a best of 9 a few times, but that was in the early 1900's. (i believe 1919 was one of them)

Pete, how can it be best of 8? That allows for a tie. Are you sure they didn't just wrap it up in eight? I know they used to do nine, but then switched to seven. Knowing how greedy owners used to be then, and still are, I"m surprised they decide on best of 13.
