I'm looking to buy a gaming system, basically only for sports games and to play surround sound DVDs and music in my basement.

My biggest concern is that the DVD function will have video and audio capabilities as good as most decent Progressive Scan DVD players with DTS audio capabilities.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

i have a playstation and feel that the gameplay is better on it than on the xbox. however, xbox does have some features that you may be looking for, notably an S-video outlet for better quality, along with the better graphics, a hard drive rather than memory cards and the halo series which is almost reason enough to buy the Xbox. i prefer sports games on playstation however and they now have a new, trimmed down size for the module. if you can, perhaps wait til 2005 for playstation 3.

i think if youre looking good a/v capabilities and all that stuff, you need to get a DVD player designed to play DVDs, not a gaming system that also happens to plays DVDs.

Xbox definitely has the better options for hookup to advanced A/V equipment.

Video output options: Analog RCA, S-Video, Component (RGB) Video
( Hi-Def output is nice if you have the television..)

Audio Output: Analog L/R RCA, Optical (for 5.1)

The DVD player is nice on the Xbox though it is an added expense, while it is built-in to new PS2.

You say you want to play a lot of DTS/5.1 DVDs... I own quite a few multichannel audio DVDs and play them on my Xbox and they sound great. As for sports games, having the surround output (Dolby Digital 5.1 as opposed to only Dolby Surround for the PS2) is very nice. the 5.1 does really add a lot to the game. However, if you can live without 5.1 gaming, the PS2 with optical out would seem to work just fine for you.

I personally chose the Xbox and it works great for what I need. I also prefer the game set (with the excepion of Gran Turismo 4 coming out soon... grrrr. :))

i love my playstation2, and the cool thing aboiut it is that all the PS1 games work in it, so that makes it to where there are a ton more games for playstation.

Wait for PS3 probably...

I would choose PS2 over Xbox, though. Halo /2 are hardly the games to spend $300 for...

Based on what I've heard from y'all, I think the X-Box is for me. Thanks for helping me confirm my decision! PJ MESSAGE BOARDS ROCK!!!

And while I'm on the topic...

Is it worth it to buy the X-Box Bundle Pack for an extra $50 to get another controller (which I know I want), the Knights Of The Old Republic game, an RF Adapter, and a Cheat Sheet?

I see that KOTOR is a role playing game. I used to be a D&D geek, but I'm not sure that I want to go back there. What does RPG really mean nowadays? I don't mind something a little more cerebral than just fighting, but the fighting and hands on playing is still most important. I am still a Star Wars geek, so should I get this?

Thanks everyone.

I'd go with an X-BOX even though I'm a Nintendo fan myself. It's the most powerful system.

This bundle pack comes packaged with an extra controller? insteresting, Game STop doesn't sell it which is why i ask. But anyhoo, if you're into sports get the xbox pack that comes packaged with NCAA FOOTBALL 2005 and Top SPIN (AWESOME TENNIS GAME). If you want an extra controller, seek used ones, they are cheaper (off brand ones we sell for 12.99) and get KOTOR I for 17.99 used (it's 19.99 new, yeah..only a two buck difference, but you get store warranties through used stuff, and 7 days to try out a game, if you don't like it, you can bring it back for a full refund) and if you happen to love KOTOR I, get KOTOR II since it just came out yesterday.

on the PS2 debate, i know people say "choose it because it has the most games" but...75% of those games are utter crap, Sony will put their license on any game a developer makes for it's system it seems, cause there are some BAD games out there, and lots of them for PS2. Besides PS2 i hear doesn't support 5.1 surround sound anyway, so there's no point in using it as a DVD player unless all you use is a stereo tv.

Gamecube has the best selection of games ever, some may not like some of the games cause it's not for them, but most of them play great and are of high quality.

I get motion sickness after playing my Xbox for about 15-20 minutes, it sucks. I had to go lie down on Saturday I nearly threw up. I'm not a big time gamer but I used to play a lot as a kid and never had this problem, probably because the graphics got so much better. Needless to say it takes me forever to get through a game since I can only play in spurts.

I bought 'Spiderman 2' when it came out because I heard how great of a game it was and when I first played it, I got a bit sick from the camerawork in the game, especially the way it shifts angles when you crawl from the side of the building to the top of the building.

Right now Vice City is a big problem for me. There's one part where you have to drop some bombs with a helicopter, it took me a long time to get that done. Maybe I should take a gravol before I play or something. How pathetic is that?

I didn't have that problem with that game--not on the Gamecube anyway. But, I have been known to get motion sick from games, and I generally cannot play first-person shooters b/c of that.
