Just curious why the mainstream media cites the fallout from the ticketmaster boycott in 94 as being the reason popularity dropped off (the theory being they played no TM venues and tour support was hard)
I think it is BS. A confluence of reasons exist why PJ cant sell the way Green Day, a mid 90s band still can. Aside from the macro factors like modern rock radio dying and music industry decline, here are my reasons. What are yours
1. Refusal to make music videos post-Ten makes attracting a new fan base harder.
2. Vitalogy kind of kept Vs momentum going saleswise bc it was a "rock" record, but No Code's inaccessability ended the momentum. If Yield followed Vit., things would be differrent
3. EV is mocked by the press as a liberal buffoon during RA (which I think is BS, he has a mouthpiece, he uses it)
All these things contribute to mainstream folks thinking PJ is some kind of grunge revival act.

it was that, the end of the grunge era, the aborted tour and difficult no code tour, and the inaccessibilty of No Code. it's just easier to focus on the ticketmaster stuff since it's more dramatic

I have to agree with the No Code comment, I remember MTV calling it this big experiment which was so incredibly different from the previous albums, they said it was a different PJ and they were asking random people on the street to listen and give their thoughts as to whether it was any good, they asked questions which begged for a negative response such as does it measure up to their previous work and shit like that. I remember the people they asked looked like they were anything but fans of rock music, people that probably weren't into them in the first place if I didn't know better at the time I might have listened like I some of my friends did and write it off. The ticketmaster thing made them harder to see in concert, I remember trying to call the number and trying to get my older brother to at the same time and could never get through till it was sold out like 10 minutes later...remember they were the biggest act in the world at the time so that was tough for people, but they were right about ticketmaster, they are so fucked up and now look at how much worse they are now they did a hell of a lot more than keep up with inflation. The lack of music videos did make them less accessible to the fairweather fans who listen to top 40 shit or whatever is on MTV at any given moment, so many people thought they broke up a long time ago. Although after all, that may be exactly how they like it, it didn't really seem to hurt them that much beyond record sales.

yea. pjammin makes the point that the tour deal wasn't pretty, and he's right. i think it was part of it, but i think it's definitely villified too much.

so very true...it just couldn't compete with those boy bands by their standards they were just way too talented.
I meant by PJ's standards, although what you say is sadly correct too

Thank you. It wasn't Ticketmaster at all. It was No Code. The band made an album that was very challenging and in turn ended up separating the posers from the hardcore fans. The posers stopped listening, hence the drop in popularity.
