Hey guys I was wondering if any of the South american/Latin Americans out there can help me out. I am taking a class on Latin American Cultural politics. For my final paper I need to use a movie (outside from the syllabus) and a book from the class. I would be very thanful for some suggestions for a film. There are no content restrictions, it just has to be a "Latin American film"

these are the ones we have already studied:

Tieta de Agreste
Motorcycle Diaries
I, The Worst of All
Real Women Have Curves
The Official Story
Kiss of the Spider Woman
Frida

I am thinking of doing either El Mariachi or Y Tu Mama Tambien. but need SUGGESTIONS!

City of God. It's pretty much the best film in the past decade or so, from anywhere.

I'd go for the obvious and say "Amores Perros"... Imo a great film, no true genre, great music. Or you could go for "Maria, llena eres de gracia" wich was highly acclaimed at the 2004 sundance festival.

Y Tu Mama Tambien, Amores Perros, City of God, Maria Full of Grace. Any one of those would be an excellent choice.

Y tu mama tambien, is ok I guess... But kinda lame as well... The narrative works well... I also have to mention "Por la libre"... This a great one imo.

I like Y Tu Mama Tambien because it examines the lives of its characters outside of the narrative using the narration technique. Beautiful film.

Excellent observation for a 19 year old man.

i'd go for a classic and pick any Luis Buñuel mexican film, you can't go wrong with Los olvidados. GREAT movie. really, you'll thank me later.

and btw, y tu mama..., amores perros and por la libre suck balls, especially if you are a mexican (which i am) and you know that mexico isn't like that at all.

Soy mexicano, carnal.

And while I agree with Mexico not being anything like its depicted in those movies, I still think those are good movies. I bet Egypt is nothing like the Egypt we get to see in movies, but that doesn't mean that there are no good movies oriented in Egypt.

què onda ese, jajjajaja :D

still, amores perros is for people who didn't see pulp fiction and had never seen a kinda mainstream movie with non-chronological order and several stories overlapping.

and y tu mama, the script is really utter crap, NOBODY talks like that NOWHERE in the world, it feels so forced and unnatural just for the sake of making those guys super cool or whatever.
