Pump up the Jam
From: By Kathy McCabe

"I can honestly say I don't give a flying f... for any kind of commercial success," Vedder says. "That has no relevance to my participation in the band whatsoever."
"The idea is to maintain relevance and feel like your work is valid so you can play shows with new material that has current emotion, that you can share with an audience that continues to grow, not necessarily in numbers but as human beings and you are sharing this experience together."
Vedder and his bandmates will have no choice in the matter of success.
Relevance seems to be assured as the first single Worldwide Suicide and five other tracks have already leaked on the internet, the postmodern indicator of demand for a band.
The fans are flooding forums with discussion about the songs and are more keen than ever to see Pearl Jam's name next to a No.1.
Vedder maintains he doesn't want it.
"The commercial success, if it got out of hand like it did early on, we would be right back in a position we worked really hard to get out of. And survive it. The band that was everywhere and people got sick of."

they've got a way to go before they get to 10 million, or even 2 million. They've also said they'd like to be a bit more visible then they were. It's a balance

If this album reaches 2 million sold, I would be shocked. As good as it is, that is a stretch for them in this day and age. I think that is exactly how they want it. Do a little better, but not get out of control.

I don't think that they will ever have to worry about being everywhere like they once were. I did get into my car the other day and WWS was on and I briefly had that moment where I was like "they're playing this again?" which I often do when listening to the radio. That hasn't happened with PJ in a long time. It's a station out of Grand Rapids, MI and they're coming here for the first time, so it could be that element too. Hard to say. I'm so over-exposed to the band, it's hard to tell if they really are everywhere.

I think the boys will be better off this tour and album as a whole. Nothing astronomical, but it will be better in many records. Remember, the whole download world has really dimished sales. It's almost the 1/2 factor. The biggest selling album of the year today might sell 4 million it seems.
The times, they are a-changin'.
God bless,
Jared

they have completely drifted out of the mainstream after no code and could have made so much more money over the years by promoting their albums, but they didnt...its about time for them to promote an album

Just because Eddie doesn't care, that doesn't mean that Kelly Curtis doesn't care.
