It was released in 1967. It was Jean-Luc Godard's last conventional film after 8 years and 15 theatrical releases in as many years, which is absolutely huge for any contemporary director.
Weekend is terrific, its incredibly depraved yet insightful, despite the very cynical conclusions it comes to about humanity. The humor of the film is very dark (rapes, unexplained beatings, rampant promiscuity, murders), but I'd recommend it for anybody concerned with chaotic, self-reflexive cinema. I'd suggest seeing Breathless, Band of Outsiders, or My Life to Live before jumping into this one. But if you can find it and are a little more interested in non-traditional films, rent it. Scorsese and Tarantino were very influenced by filmmaking like this (as were a thousand others) so use them as reference points.

Thanks, g_v, I think this one's going right to the top of my Netflix list.

I need to buy this film, I would be stunned if Criterion re-released it.

It seems like a good one for them to pick up. There are several Godards they should grab.

I just saw this. I loved the first three-fourths or so but then it lost track a little bit. I understand that's the whole point, but I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much after it got preachy and the anarchists came into the picture. The majority of it had me laughing out loud though. Excellently dark satire.

i'm in the same boat... i still stand that pierrot le fou is my favorite i've seen of godard, and that the dance scene in band of outsiders is the best ever.
