Family Booted From Buffet For Wasting Too Much Food Manager Says Family Wasted Food Several Times
POSTED: 10:19 am EDT May 5, 2006
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet.
The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management at Dragon House accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.
Dershem said she paid for her buffet on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.
Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits. They said she would pile her plate with food, take one bite and throw it away.
"They just take one bite and throw it away," said cashier Lin Huyen. "They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food."
Dershem said she was shocked by the scolding and complained to management when she paid her check.
Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant does not offer an all-you-can waste buffet. He said Dershem's family took food, didn't finish it and then piled on the same food again, he said. He says he won't allow her back in the restaurant unless she changes her ways.

Ever go to a Chinese Buffet with crab legs. They're usually slow getting them out, and then one person runs up and takes like 50 and no one else gets any?
I usually club that person to death with the Buddha statue.

Just wait until the start doing what they do in some other countries (I heard it from a Brazilian) and charge customers for the food thrown away. That'll fix the problem real quick.

If it really was as wasteful as the restaurant claims, then I applaud them for kicking the SOBs out. I don't have a problem with people throwing out something because they didn't like it (hell i've done that before) but being blatantly wasteful is rediculous.

I think you should be allowed to try everything once each, then decide on what you like and don't like and stick to that. I mean buffets can have different things in different places on different occasions! Even without that how can you expect someone to remember where and what everything is?!

I read about this last week. One of the wait staff said that the kids would take more than one of something, throw it out, and then go get more of the same thing.
I think the resteraunt was in the right. I mean, they see how many patrons a week? For them to recognise this one family, AND notice that they had a habit of being overly-wasteful, they HAD to do it often.
I can't imagine 'all you can eat' places operating at an especially high profit margin (except for when I eat there!) If everyone basically ate all they could - PLUS, randomly threw out piles of food as well - that just CANT be good for buisness.

"and then go get more of the same thing."- in that case I agree!

in a different article, it said the family had looked into a lawyer to see what rights it had. most lawyers all said that a restaurant is entitled to throw you out based on business decisions. as long as it wasn't racially or sexually discrimanatory.
how annoying is that that this family thinks that its entitled to something additional than the the food they've already wasted?

I agree in this particular instance but with the rule as a whole though. Should Wetherspoons be able to chuck someone who orders the 2 for whatever it is now on the grounds it's a business decision?
