the local video store has a handful of these movies and i was wondering if any of them were worth watching. I've seen a few japanese films including ringu, ichi the killer, audition, and the japanese version of the grudge and i was quite entertained by all of them. a couple that i was going to check out are: a tale of two sisters and the heirloom.

The only one I've seen is Oldboy, and I definitely recommend it.

Oldboy should definitely be the next movie on your list. Then, see Sympathy for Mr. Vengence, which is Chan-Wook Park's first movie in his revenge trilogy (which includes Oldboy and the final film, Sympathy for Lady Vengence). Park is pretty much my favorite director working today.

A Tale of Two Sisters is great as well, sort of like a Korean Lynch movie..

I'll recommend Oldboy as well, so that's three of us on that one. Also, I really enjoyed Audition and Battle Royale. Some of that stuff is pretty hit or miss though.

Most of it is shit, although that's the case with all movies. Still, it's mainly Asian filmmakers that really excite me at the moment.

yeah, at least most of them seem to be going for something original. then a couple years later some american production comes along and everyone thinks its new, when it was actually released in asia a few years ago. but yeah, definitely hit or miss with these types of films.

It seems to be particuarly bad with these, especially when there's such a large group of fans who think that anything that comes out of the Asia extreme realm is just the most awe inspiring, fucked up movie you've ever seen. There's some gold in there, but for the most part I think it's pretty overblown.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I love all of the Miike stuff I've seen so far and I dig Oldboy, but I really don't like the supernatural horror stuff they're doing. And I was incredibly disappointed with Battle Royale.

And then, of course, there is Versus.
