Do you think?
I've been thinking about this for awhile, that since it's been such a long layoff since RA, and you know for damn sure they'd composed enough new songs for at least 2 albums, that maybe we'd get treated with the release of a double album. And though I don't really like to make a comparison here, as the Chili Peppers aren't a group I'm much a fan of at all, but.... they did release a double after an extended silence.
FUN FACT (since I can't fit the actual show quote of Ed's): Sales of RIOT ACT upon 1st release were "insanely disproportionate" in the Camden/Philly area to the rest of the country.

well the reason for the long wait was mainly touring... but i think your gunna have to ask the band if u want a real answer, personally i doubt a double album would have been on the cards
I would rather have Pearl Jam go on a 3 1/2 year hiatus & return with an incredible masterpiece like their new album, than release an album once every two years that's just mediocre by their standards
Big Wave Reprise . Yeak that would have been good
Double Album???
Like rap albums they could have had an intro and outro, I guess
Man they were really taking a knee and running out the clock with just a regular album .
They barely got 13 tracks if you count reprise and you shouldn't. A Double Album ???? With What ???
In a number of interviews they mentioned they were working with over 20 tracks.
Exactly, that's just what I'm talking about. C'mon guys, this is the PJ that we know, when HAVEN'T they made a record whose development time saw the birth of a ton of songs, but only the typical 15 or less making it?
And uh, is the "message pit" remark suppose to be an insult towards me? because if it is you'll have to try plenty harder than that.

Hahaha, yeah man. What was that guy thinking? Talking about Pearl Jam on this Pearl Jam board, pssh.
Anyway, I was thinking about this as well. Does anyone remember some of the other tracks they had mentioned in interviews... I remember Of The Earth, 2x4, and Cold Concession among some others... anyone else know more?

I'd need to hear some of the songs that didn't make it to know whether or not this was a good thing. PJ is best in 45-50 minute doses, and I'd rather a tight album where every song was strong (like we got) instead of a mellon collie with enough songs for 1 great album but a final product that consists of 15 or so great songs and a ton of filler.

looking at lost dogs i think the tracklisting could have been picked much better, cutting out the shit like sweet lew, so i agree with that to some extent. however if they had someone descent in to lay down the law to them and say for example - "no ed, breakerfall is pretty lame, letter to the dead is going on there instead so shut the fuck up" then it could have worked quite well.

well I like breakerfall but either way someone needed to be fired for how the binaural tracklist ended. And I suppose Tchad blake was.

Hey Stip, what on Mellon Collie is filler? I'll agree there is a handful of subpar songs, but overall I think the double album worked out great for the Pumpkins.
double albums are a novelty. the great ones are the ones that keep the fluff to a minimum. Look at the Foo Fighters' recent one. It has some good tracks on it, but there's a lot of filler on there. i think a better record could be made from just one. But it's a novelty. They've done the first few to solidfy their sound. they do an experimental one, then a back to basics one, then a really live "off the cuff" one, then they do a double album. this seems to be a pattern a lot of rock bands do.
personally, with the exception of the white album, i really don't think there's a double album i really love. maybe "the wall". but even Physical Graphiti (sp?) is far from Zep's best record. Just my thought. I think PJ is a great record period.

Clearly a double album was possible ... they kept on talking about songs called "2x4" and "Cold Concession" that didn't end up on the album.
I think too many bands cram as much music onto one or two CD's, but I think a good album typically has a length of 30-50 minutes, 11-13 songs. I bet if Riot Act had two fewer songs on it people would think it's a better album.
