so... after the irving show i've had this weird ringing in my ears for a few days... it did go away and then came back
decided to go to the doctor yesterday...and was diagnosed with moderate hearing loss at certain frequencies in one ear
anyhow, when the lady heard how often i go to shows, she was almost mad at me that i'm not wearing eargplus. i never even tried, cause i thought it'd ruin the experience.
needless to say, i've got earplugs for upcoming weekend shows...but man do i hope it wont ruin the experience....will still wear them, health is more important...but was wondering if anybody has worn earplugs to PJ shows, hows does it affect the experience...
and for those who are not.. be careful with those ears.

I've worn earplugs to other shows, and it hasn't made too much of a difference. Part of the problem at irving was the small space. be careful, but at big venues they're probably not necessary.

Wow, I'm sorry about your hearing loss.
Sometimes I see people not wearnig ordinary foam ear plugs, but rather prescription ear plugs. These are designed to fit your ear perfectly and still allows you to hear everything perfectly, just at a lower volume. They cost up to $300, but apparently some people think it's worth it.
Do some internet research and find out more about this stuff. I would definitely consider them if I could afford it.
Again, sorry about the hearing loss. Best case scenario is that the ringing is only temporary and eventually fades away.

You want some fucking hearin' loss? Try blasting 'Rearviewmirror' on your headphones for a few hours like I did when I first got into PJ... holy shit I couldnt hear anything

yeah, after a concert years ago i had the same problem in which my ears rang for days and days. never quite been the same although it's not nearly as bad as it was.
Bottom line: whether it hurts the experience or not, WEAR EARPLUGS!
And hairplugs too.
Unless you're in a big venue... the earplugs that is.

I was front row at the first Borgata show and my ears were ringing for a while after the show. I could feel the music go right through my body. Kinda cool, but when my ears didn't stop ringing and I was shouting at everyone I got kinda nervous.
I would say wear the ear plugs and if you don't like it take them out. Or just wear them during songs you don't really like.

I think ear plugs can make it better. They take out that peripheral noise and clean up the frequency in my opinion.
They are a must. I went to Big Day Out years ago and had ringing for days. Every since worn earplugs and it doesn't effect the experience in my opinion.

I wouldn't bother with a big outdoor show where you won't be close, otherwise it's probably a good idea. I say this and have forgotten to take them or just not worn them on several occasions.

my mom is a audiologist and she has all these pamplets in her office that have quotes from Pete Townsend about how deaf he is
the earplugs she makes are totally worth it because they last forever and fit perfectly and work like a million times better than the foam ones. not to mention way cheaper than hearing aids, which you'll need if you dont get the plugs!

I guess you mean it doesn't ruin the experience? I really didn't start wearing earplugs to PJ shows until last year. I remember in '03 they didn't seem nearly as loud as they did last year. And Sleater Kinney was MUCH louder in '05.
I would certainly recommend it. I admit it's not quite the same, but it is nice to be able to actually hear when the show is over (as I think I have some hearing loss form not wearing them for so many years). I would especially recommend it if you are going to several shows in a short span.

I was a little freaked out when the open band started at the Vancouver show last year. It was way louder than i expected. okay, I know I'm old, whatever...
I was really happy I had earplugs with me. I tend to wear them just during the loudest songs.
I wonder how the band does it for months on end. Are they all deaf?
I won't go to any of the PJ shows this year without a pair of earplugs in my pocket. I hate that ringing feeling...
