Okay, is Maynard's extremely long growl at the end of this song for real? No production tricks or anything?
If it's really just him then it's rather unnerving.

In concert he uses effects to lengthen the scream, and doesn't do it nearly as long as on the album. I'm guessing on the album some effects are used to lengthen it, or maybe he did it at a lower volume and it was made to sound more intense.

I like the "Goodbiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee" scream on Eulogy. That shit was for real when i saw them do it live. Then i went to another show and he didn't do it. He just said a quick goodbye. It must have to with how he feels that day during the show

I like the "Aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive, Iiiiiiiiiii...." scream in Parabola, too.

It must be mostly real. I've never heard anything to the contrary. The echo effect or whatever is only a second, out of the whole bunch of seconds that the scream lasts.

ive seen it live 3 times and it is real. although probably aided a "little" bit. he does hit that note for a long time too...and as was said earlier, the eulogy scream is 100% real so hes proven he can hit those kind of notes and sustain it for a LOOOOONG time....and thats why maynard rules

I just popped in a Tool dvd bootleg from MSG in 2001(?). I can't remember yeatrs anymore, sorry. He definitely belts out the whole scream during The Grudge. I really didn't hear any "helping" vocals. Pretty fucking cool. Maynard also threw in "Suspicious Minds" in the middle of Stinkfist which was pretty cool. This bootleg kicks ass. The quality is nothing special but until the band puts out something like it i guess it's all i got.

On all the bootlegs I've heard with The Grudge (maybe 4-5), you can hear the echo kick in about 2 seconds after he starts the scream. He definitely holds it for a while, but there is a delay effect that sustains it after he stops.

I'll have to listen again but i really didn't hear any effect. I had it on pretty loud so maybe i drowned it out. i'm on Pushit right now. I was at this show and in the middle of this song i lost my shit and thought i was seriously dying(consumed too many mushrooms, beer and opium). Towards the end of the song i had a sort of out of body experience and felt like a million buks. Greatest concert moment ever......

He might not use the echo at every show, but I know for sure that he uses it sometimes. That's not to say that he's not an amazing vocalist, just that he isn't reproducing the kind of scream heard on the album live. And I know what you mean.. had a similar experience at the show I went to with a few good hits of acid..
