I actually remember hearing about that. Didn't he get his neck slashed with a skate?

Quote:
Clint Malarchuk (May 1, 1961, Grande Prairie, Alberta) is a former Albertan ice hockey goaltender who played in the NHL between 1981 and 1992. He is probably best known for an injury sustained during one of the most horrific in-game incidents in sports history.

Malarchuk played for the Québec Nordiques, Buffalo Sabres, and Washington Capitals throughout his career. He was a very competent but not great goalie, with a career record of 141 wins, 130 losses, 45 ties, and 12 shutouts, and a 0.885 save percentage.

The notable incident occurred during a game on March 22, 1989 between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Malarchuk's Buffalo Sabres. Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres collided at the mouth of the goal, and Tuttle's skate caught Malarchuk on the throat, slicing open his outer carotid artery. With pools of blood collecting on the ice, Malarchuk somehow left the ice under his own power with the assistance of his team's trainer, Jim Pizzatelli. Meanwhile, many spectators were physically sickened by the sight, and local television cameras covering the game instantly cut away from the sight of Malarchuck.

Malarchuk spent only one night in the hospital, and was back on the ice with his team two weeks later. However, his performance declined over the next few years, to the point that Malarchuk left the NHL. He battled obsessive-compulsive disorder (attributed to his injury) for a time, but he eventually returned to hockey, in the International Hockey League. After retiring as a player, Malarchuk continued his hockey career as a coach.

After Malarchuk's injury, the NHL instituted a policy requiring all goalies to wear neck protection.

I didn't see the game live, just highlights a year or so later. They played the radio broadcast about a year or so ago on sports radio here, because the Buffalo News had the first photo I posted on the front page of the sports section. Pretty crazy.

The audio on the broadcast is gut-wrenching. Mike Robitaille keeps yelling for the director to go to commercial.

ESPN aired a story on it about the same time the story was in the Buffalo News a year ago.

As soon as I saw the NHL sweaters, I had a feeling it was going to be that footage. I remember hearing about that. I just didn't remember what teams were involved. Or how long ago it happened.

I remember seeing that on SportsCenter a few years ago. That had to hurt like a bitch. Clint Malarchuk used to play for the LV Thunder and I think that he still owns a ranch north of town.

My brother-in-law got a skate cross his cheek when he played in high school and now he has a scar. I was going to go to the game that he got his cheek slashed too but I had to work.

I thought it was funny that hockey players don't get surgery when they break their noses because it gives their faces character, and breaking your nose is kinda like a badge of honor.

When Aaron Rowand broke his nose, Barry Melrose said something like "Don't get that fixed young man! You've got a battle scar now." I think Barry said he never had face surgery until he retired and he had all kinds of crap happen to him.
