I'm not a huge fan of this move because our staff continues to get older. It will be a 38 year old, a 41 year old, Pedro's like 34, Wakefield is in his mid 30s and Arroya is the baby at 29. I would have preferred Pavano, his best years are still ahead of him.

I think all these major free agent pitchers are pretty risky deals. Pavano and Wright have each had just one good year this century and it was a contract year for both of them. Meanwhile, Milton isn't exactly an ace and Wells has bust written all over him.
$8 million guaranteed for next year? That's crazy for a 41-year-old pitcher who was just lucky enough to have a good year playing for his hometown team. I think this is a bad move.

I liked the idea when it was a one year contract. I don't know about two years. He is pretty old, and not 100% reliable. But he had a good year last year, and his personality (I hate to say it) fits this team very well. And apparently he REALLY wants to play here.
And let's face it, he's sticking it to George Steinbrenner, and that's all I could ever ask for.

No. From ESPN.com:
"The Red Sox have come to terms with 41-year-old left-hander David Wells. The deal guarantees $8 million for one year, but if he makes 31 starts he would be guaranteed $13 million. The two-year contract could be worth $16 to $18 million."

Yeah, and he's really old, extremely lazy, and prone to injury.

re:injury prone he's make 30 starts 8 of the last 9 years.
i just like the guy's guts/toughness and think he's a better big game pitcher than milton or jarret wright.

Need I remind you of the 2003 World Series? Game 5? Left the game after the first inning because he was too lazy to get his fat ass in decent enough shape to pitch. Yeah, that's a big game pitcher for you. There's not too many games bigger than Game 5 of the World Series.

Those guys aren't great options, either. If Wells works out, that's great, I just think it's really risky, especially for the money he's getting.

Actually it is 8 million TOTAL for TWO years.
The pact is worth a guaranteed total of $8 million over two years. However, incentive clauses -- mainly starts per season -- could bring the balance all the way to $18 million.
