Marine Sacrifices Finger in Bid to Save Wedding Ring
But Ring Gets Lost in Chaos
VICTORVILLE, Calif. (Dec. 12) - When Marine Lance Cpl. David Battle learned he'd either have to sacrifice his ring finger or the wedding band he wore, he told doctors at a field hospital in Iraq to cut off the finger.
The 19-year-old former high school football star suffered a mangled left hand and serious wounds to his legs in a Nov. 13 fire fight in Fallujah. Battle, who is recovering at his parents' home in this desert city 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, came under attack as he and fellow Marines entered a building. Eleven other Marines were wounded.
Doctors were preparing to cut off Battle's ring to save as much of his finger as they could.
''But that would mean destroying my wedding ring,'' he said. ''My wife is the strongest woman I know. She's basically running two people's lives since I've been gone. I don't think I could ever repay her or show her how grateful ... how much I love my wife, my soul mate.''
With his approval, doctors severed his finger, but somehow in the chaos that followed, they lost his ring.
Although Battle was disappointed, his wife, Devon, said she was honored.
''I can't believe he did that,'' she said. ''At first I was mad when he told me, but then I realized how lucky I am to have him in my life.''
The couple, who met in the eighth grade, were married in June, just two weeks before Battle left for Iraq. He hopes to eventually return to the Marines, and to replace his wedding ring, but that will have to wait until he recovers.
In the meanwhile, Battle's high school has planned a banquet in his honor next week.
''We need to make more David Battles,'' said Daniel Pierce, the school's assistant head coach. ''He is one amazing guy.''

Unbelievable that they lost the ring after all that.
Anyway, he should have just cut the ring, and had it reformed at a later date. Seems a little ridiculous to have your finger cut off. To each their own.

I think it was lame machismo. The wife should have said "no." IMO.

If my husband did that.... I really think any happy thoughts about his valiant effort to save the ring would be eliminated by my anger at his stupidity, but whatever.

I'll be the first to admit that I am a cynical bastard with an icy heart, but this type of story smacks of propaganda. In the media this is whats known as a human interest story, and while in and of itself it is a fairly harmless account of one man's well intentioned but arguably misguided actions as a result of his devotion to his wife, it is this type of Norman Rockwell reporting that allows a majority of our nation to sleep at night while our government perpetrates unjust military actions around the globe.
Postscript: to respond to those about to flame me, I have nothing but respect for all of our military personnel and all they do for us. I take exception with the article, not those portrayed in it. But I sure as hell wouldn't cut off my finger to save a ring.

Actually, I agree with almost everything you said. Oh, how I wish all the attention given to Scott Peterson went to the Darfur situation instead.
I cannot fathom that anyone would want their finger cut off to keep a fucking piece of metal intact, which could be repaired later, or replaced.

Based on the guy's devotion to this ring, I can already hear his reaction: "the nassty doctorses took the precious, yes, they stole it from us and we wants it!"

The aforementioned black iciness of my heart made me laugh out loud at this

Yep, pretty much the mere mention of the Peterson trial makes smoke come out of my ears. And I wish we could lobotomize the people who feverishly disect every element of this fucking thing. WHY DO PEOPLE CARE SO MUCH ABOUT THIS ONE FRIGGING EVENT!?!?!?

this guy is an idiot... i think a loving and understanding woman would want her husband to keep his fingers intact... and if the finger was already screwed like someone said, then what is so worthy about what this guy did... scott peterson is actually a more newsworthy story than this one (and there arent many out there worse than ole peterson's)

It's real life drama, baby! All of the sordid yet exciting dirty laundry comes to life! Ooooooh.....
I wouldn't mind if they knocked themselves out with the trial over at Court TV or a similar station, but major news networks devoting time to it just isn't right.
