In searching for a digital camera for my mother in law for Christmas, I went to a couple of different store who were having sales. Both stores were out of the camera that was on special.
So instead of driving to yet another store on a fruitless mission, I called the store, Circut City, to see if they had any of the cameras in stock.
They told me they did, they had nine. Knowing that nine cameras can sell out quickly when they were as inexpensive as the one I wanted, I asked if they could put one aside for me as I was on my way down to the store.
They told me, "We don't put items on hold during Christmas."
What the fuck is that all about? They want us running into their stores and grabbing sale merchandise like animals? Just because it is Christmas they put aside common customer courtesey?
Maybe you all don't think it is reason enough to boycott, but I do. This crazed consumer environment we are in is getting uglier every day, and if we don't participate in it, then merchants will be forced to change the way they do business.
I will not be turned into an animal to save $50.

Here's a warning regarding Circuit City--DO NOT BUY THEIR INSURANCE POLICIES.
My mom bought my sister a new laptop there, and the sales rep there talked her into buying a policy, confirming that it covered everything. Well, two years later one of the hinges came undone, and when my mom called into their customer service, they said the policy only covered anything internally wrong with the computer. or what if they had one of them left, and they were holding it for someone else, youd start a thread about how circuit city is homo for not selling you an item they had in stock

But I wanted to get it fixed before my insurance expired, so I took it in. There was also a small problem with the floppy drive that sometimes made ejecting the disc a pain in the ass. So anyways, I took it to Best Buy for repairs. They sent it in and a few days later I got a call saying that it would be too expensive to fix and therefore they would provide me with a new laptop as replacement. I actually got a big upgrade out of the deal because of the sales at the time. Not a bad deal.

Not all of my Best Buy stories are happy ones...like finding U2's "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" for $19.99. I almost crapped when I saw that price. But for the record, I hate Circuit City.

You could have easily ordered it from Circuit City's website and picked it up at the store. You can also use their website to see which stores near you have it in stock.
I don't want to go to Best Buy because I fear they and Wal Mart will take over the universe. I shopped at Circut City because they always had more of a "small store" feel to their customer service.
I am ready to give up and go hide in a corner until the Capitalist Christmas buying frenzy is over.

I never shop at Circuit City. When they first opened years ago their customer service was such complete crap, I went there twice and never went again. They offer nothing that a dozen other stores can't provide, or hundreds of other online retailer.

maybe even wolf camera.
This is all fine if you know that the item in question is exactly what you want. I wanted to look at the camera to make sure it was not too "complex" for my electronics-challenged mother in law.
But thanks for the suggestion of updating my shopping methods. I do hate shopping with a passion, so maybe I'll go all online all the time...

You could just go to the stores to compare items and then go home and buy it online. I've done that a few times. Seems to work well.

Crutchfield offers much more detailed descriptions than most. It might help you decide more easily.

I have another classic Circuit City story.
When the "Everyday" album from Dave Matthews Band came out a few years ago Circuit City had it advertised at the lowest price (beat Best Buy's price, Target, etc...)....so I go to pick it up the day it comes out and they are out it. I mean come on how can you be out of that album the day it comes out? Everyone knew that would be a big release so they should have had plenty of copies. Instead they advertise a decent price to get people in the store. It's called bait and switch and I haven't stepped in a Circuit City store since.
