Pakistani Teen Dies After Being Shot for Refusing Marriage Proposal

Monday , May 22, 2006

KARACHI, Pakistan — A 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was allegedly shot by male relatives over a rebuffed marriage proposal has died at a hospital in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, police said Monday.

Noor Jehan was shot five times and left for dead in a ditch on the outskirts of Karachi on April 18. She was rescued by police and taken to a hospital.

Jehan died early Sunday of a wound to the abdomen that got infected, said Seemi Jamali, a doctor at the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Institute, where she was being treated.

Jamali said Jehan's body was sent to a city morgue and no one has come to claim it.

Jehan had been shot in the legs and abdomen and had been struggling for life at the hospital without family support. Police suspect her parents were scared into hiding, fearing retribution from the attackers.

In a May 2 interview with The Associated Press, Jehan said she was shot by male cousins after her father refused to give her hand in marriage to one of them, who then accused her of having an affair with another man.

Last week, police arrested three men suspected of involvement in the attack on Jehan, said Jahan Khan Niazi, a Karachi police official. Three other suspects in the case, including two of Jehan's cousins, are still at large, he said.

Violence against women is common in Pakistan and hundreds of honor killings are reported each year. Male relatives consider it a violation of the family's honor if their female relatives have an extramarital affair or if they marry someone without family approval.

it seems that after reading it closer, it was the father who refused the proposal, not her.

This is all the fault of those Lesbo feminists. If they weren't always meddling in people's affairs and inciting women to divorce and kill their children then things like this wouldn't happen.

My God that is so awful, I don't know where to begin.

A 14 year old girl? She had a whole LIFE ahead of her. Then she was left in a ditch as if she was garbage? I don't know, this story really gets to me.

Was this done by the government? Although Afghanistan tried to kill someone for converting to Christianity so I can see your point. One of the biggest problems with the war on terror is it's half-baked. Too much sensitivity is being shown to Sharia law.

I remember a guy saying that instead of Iraq, teh US should have invaded Saudi Arabia cause Mecca under the control of a western power would make the muslim world go apeshit.

well they would be wildly incorrect. iran has professed support for terrorist groups. they are a large element behind the current insurgency in Iraq. it's very possibly they would pass this technology on to suicide bombers. that is much different than using nuclear technology in a conventional war, which the US has done obviously but just as well you can argue we are pretty much unwilling to use it now but under the most extreme circumstances.

comparing America's use of nuclear weaponry with what Iran might seek to do with it is a stretch.

And how did we go from civilians in Pakistan to the Iran government?
